ULC On the Move

This week, ULC Board Chair Melanie Huggins announced that ULC will move its headquarters to Washington, DC, and close its Chicago office in September 2014. 'The Executive Board believes that ULC can better carry out its mission in Washington where many organizations that are doing similar or complementary work in building strong communities and supporting new learning models are located. ULC opened a small office in Washington last year. Since then, it has become clear to the Board that consolidating ULC operations there is both highly desirable from a mission and program perspective and more cost effective.' From ULC's CEO Susan Benton, 'this move supports ULC's strategic work and we look forward to sharing details about the transition in the weeks ahead.'

National Library Legislative Day: #nlld14

On May 5-6, library leaders from across the nation will travel to Washington, DC, to advocate on behalf of the enduring value libraries provide to local communities. Whether you are in DC or advocating from your local community, National Library Legislative Day (Tweet #nlld14) is an important opportunity to be heard. An urgent policy issue that affects libraries everywhere is modernizing the nation's current E-Rate program. IMLS recently held a public hearing on this topic; summaries of FCC Chairman Thomas Wheeler's remarks and those of former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt are available on the ULC website. 2014 National Medal for Museum & Library Service

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has announced 10 winners of the 2014 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. In its 20th anniversary year, the National Medal is the nation's highest honor given to museums and libraries, recognizing the significant impact that outstanding institutions have on individuals, families and communities. The National Medals will be presented by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on May 8. ULC celebrates the distinction conferred on three members of our community: Chicago Public Library, IL; Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, NV; and Mid-Continent Public Library, MO.

Read and Feed! Connecting Kids to Libraries & Summer Meals

During the summer months, millions of children suffer from hunger in the absence of nutritious meals that schools provide. On Friday, May 2, the Food and Nutrition Service of the USDA, in partnership with COSLA, PLA and other organizations, presents a free one-hour webinar, "Read and Feed: Connecting Kids to Libraries and Summer Meals." 2014 Urban Player Award

ULC is accepting nominations for the 2014 Urban Player Award which will honor an outstanding civic leader whose vision and commitment elevates the essential role that public libraries play in driving community well-being. Read the guidelines and nominate a civic leader today!

2014 Joey Rodger Leadership Award

The ULC Joey Rodger Leadership Award provides a $5,000 cash award to a ULC director or senior manager so that she/he has an opportunity to strengthen her/his skills through a structured professional development undertaking. The award may be used to attend an established leadership development program or pursue an individualized program that involves working with a leadership development expert/mentor. Music to Read By

Toronto Public Library's recent One Book initiative centered on The Cellist of Sarajevo, "A spare and haunting, wise and beautiful novel about war and the endurance of the human spirit." To spread awareness, the library partnered with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra to stage 22 cellist performances at 22 locations around the city. Watch this touching footage.

National Community Engagement
