Your Brother is a Mirror
A COURSE IN MIRACLES
TEXT CHAPTER 7: THE CONSISTENCY OF THE KINGDOM
VIII. The Total Commitment

73 You do not need God's blessing since that you have forever, but you do need yours. The picture you see of yourselves is deprived, unloving, and very vulnerable. You cannot love this. Yet you can very easily escape from it or, better, leave it behind. You are not there, and that is not you. Do not see this picture in anyone, or you have accepted it as you. All illusions about the Sonship are dispelled together, as they were made together. Teach no one that he is what you would not want to be. Your brother is the mirror in which you will see the image of yourself as long as perception lasts. And perception will last until the Sonship knows itself as whole.

GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER>

1We are now ready for another review. We will begin where our last review left off and cover two ideas each day. The earlier part of each day will be devoted to one of these ideas, and the latter part of the day to the other. We will have one longer exercise period and frequent shorter ones in which we practice each of them.

2The longer practice periods will follow this general form: take about 15 minutes for each of them, and begin by thinking about the idea and the comments which are included in the assignments. Devote about three or four minutes to reading them over slowly, several times if you wish, and then close your eyes and listen. Repeat the first phase if you find your mind wandering, but try to spend the major part of the practice period listening quietly but attentively.

3There is a message waiting for you. Be confident that you will receive it. Remember that it belongs to you and that you want it. Do not allow your intent to waver in the face of distracting thoughts. Realize that, whatever form they take, they have no meaning and no power. Replace them with your determination to succeed. Do not forget that your will has power over all fantasies and dreams. Trust it to see you through and carry you beyond them all.

4Regard these practice periods as dedications to the way, the truth, and the life. Refuse to be side-tracked into detours, illusions, and thoughts of death. You are dedicated to salvation. Be determined each day not to leave your function unfulfilled.

5Reaffirm your determination in the shorter practice periods as well, using the original form of the idea for general application and a more specific form when needed. Some specific forms will be included in the comments. These, however, are merely suggestions. It is not the particular words you use that matter.

Lesson 61 and Lesson 62

GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER>

1Our ideas for review today are:

[61] I am the light of the world.

2How holy am I, who have been given the function of lighting up the world! Let me be still before my holiness. In its calm light, let all my conflicts disappear. In its peace, let me remember who I am.

3Some specific forms for applying the idea when specific difficulties seem to arise might be:

4 Let me not obscure the light of the world in me.

Let the light of the world shine through this appearance.
This shadow will vanish before the light.

[62] Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.

5It is through accepting my function that I will see the light in me. And in this light will my function stand clear and perfectly unambiguous before my sight. My acceptance does not depend on my recognizing what my function is, for I do not yet understand forgiveness. Yet I will trust that in the light I will see it as it is.

6Specific forms for using the idea might include:

7Let this help me learn what forgiveness means.

Let me not separate my function from my will.
I would not use this for an alien purpose

LESSON 81
Review II  of Lesson 61 and Lesson 62

Now we review again the lessons of the last twenty days.  This time we do one lesson "I am the light of the world," (61) in the morning and "Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world," (62)in the afternoon. The focus of the review is to read the thoughts over slowly for three or four minutes and then close your eyes and listen "quietly but attentively." (W.PI.R2.IN.3.1) We are asked to be confident that we will hear it. Set your intention and determination to succeed in hearing the message waiting for you. "Do not forget that your will has power over all fantasies and dreams." (W.PI.R2.IN.4.4) We are also asked to make these practice periods as dedications to the way, the truth and the life," (5.1) refusing "to be sidetracked into detours,  illusions and thoughts of death." (5.1-2) Each day we focus on our function of forgiveness.

And finally he reminds us that in our review of the comments that follow each idea for the day "it is not the particular words  you use that matter." This is important in that we are not trying to be good students who do what the teacher asks. There are no tests to pass and ritualistic study is not helpful. It is all about relevance and sincerity in approaching these lessons. Our focus now is to be on our purpose. Jesus says that the resurrection is " the relinquishment of all other purposes, all other interests, all other wishes and all other concerns." (M.28.1.9) What this means is that it is important to clear away distractions in our lives. Desire is what is important. If our desires are still for the things of this world, our attention will not be focused. So, to the extent that you can, recognize the importance of what you are doing and just keep your focus on your goal of awakening. I recently read an account by a friend who said that this process was like churning butter. It seems that in the process of churning, nothing is happening but you keep doing the churning and one day, all of a sudden, you have butter.

Our focus in the morning is the reminder that "I am the light of the world." If this is demonstrated then everyone we encounter could be made happier by our presence. But the light can only shine through when we bring the blocks to love for forgiveness. In the Prayer of St. Francis we read, "make me a vessel of your peace; where there is darkness let me bring light." It is our own darkness that keeps the light away. The light is always there behind our dark ego thoughts. We let our light shine through when we focus daily on our function of forgiveness.  It is our only reason to be here. And in this, we remember who we really are! "How holy am I, who have been given the function of lighting up the world!" (1.1)  Then, "let me be still before my holiness." (1.2)  It is like coming before a vision of a great spiritual being yet it is our own holiness that we come before with a sense of humility and receptiveness. And this holiness shines its calm light and brings a deep peace within our own minds where all conflicts that we hold in the mind disappear. And it is from that place of truth within that we a reflection of God's Love in the world.

We are given some specific forms in applying the idea when difficulties arise. (2.1) When difficulties arise, we often give them a lot of power to keep us in hell. But we have been given a remedy here which is to bring our perceptions of darkness to the truth where they are shined away. We are reminded that they cannot obscure the light that is in us because they have no power when we choose the truth. Difficulties are illusions and thus they are nothing unless we make them into something.

And for the second part of the day we focus on lesson 62, "Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world."  "It is through accepting my function that I will see the light in me." (3.2) It is only by bringing illusions to the truth that we can experience the light that is in our minds all the time.   If we get distressed about anything today, we are reminded that every distress is just another opportunity to forgive. The world is our classroom to remember who we are, which we can only do when we bring the darkness in our minds to the light of truth. "Realize that, whatever form such (distracting) thoughts  may take, they have no meaning and no power." (W.PI.R2.IN.4.2)  We are asked to replace these distractions with our determination to succeed. The power of our mind that is aligned with God's power "has power over all fantasies and dreams." (W.PI.R.2.IN 4.4) It is not our own power but the power of truth.  Every irritation, every frustration, every distraction, is just another opportunity to forgive.

Jesus says that we do not yet understand forgiveness, yet eventually we will for we "trust that, in the light, I will see it as it is." (3.5) Meanwhile, we just need to look at every difficult situation in our lives and let each one teach us what forgiveness means by just being willing to do the practice. Why we don't really get it, is that we think forgiveness means overlooking something that is real that someone has actually done. We do not yet recognize that nothing real has happened and that we only apply forgiveness to our own misperceptions of what we see and experience. When we experience the light and fully understand forgiveness, based on the recognition, that nothing is outside of our own minds, then we will have made great progress in our awakening. Jesus reminds us that we are still convinced that our "understanding is a powerful contribution to the truth and makes it what it is." (T.18.IV.7.5) But he reminds us that not only do we not need to understand but that our attempts to do so can actually get in the way. "Salvation is easy just because it asks nothing you cannot give right now." (T.18.IV.7) And what we can give right now is to appreciate every event and circumstance as just another opportunity to learn how to forgive.

I was doing this lesson some time ago when a situation came up that really brought it home for me. I got up very early for an appointment with the dentist, which I was really happy about as I was anxious to finally get the final stages of dental work done after having fallen and broken several teeth. I had gone through a long and arduous, not to mention expensive, process to get all the work done and was at my final appointment when I could finally have the temporary teeth replaced with implants, which would conclude this seemingly long and difficult process. It would have been like an anniversary as I had fallen in April, three years prior. I got to the office but was kept waiting, which was very unusual. I started to sense that something was wrong and finally was told that the implants were not ready. And furthermore, I could not get another appointment until late May!!

There was no explanation as to how the mistake was made but here I was having waited for this day for a long time and now I had to wait some more. As the frustration arose in me,  I remembered the lesson "let me recognize my problems have been solved." (W.P.I. 80)    I thought about how only I could determine it to be a problem by giving it whatever meaning I chose. When moments of irritation came up about my early morning, driving all the way downtown and paying for parking, I chose to let it go and wondered what the day might bring. Having missed breakfast I decided to go to a diner and then I asked the Holy Spirit to help me see everything in the light of love and to extend that through whatever holy encounters were to be brought into my day.

I ordered breakfast and chatted with a lovely server and started to read Chapter 8.III "The Holy Encounter." Shortly after ordering breakfast,  a couple walked in who I had not seen for  perhaps 15 years or so. They are two practicing psychologists who wanted to know what I was doing these days. I mentioned the course and the 'Power of Clearing' sessions that I do, and they wanted to know more and asked for my phone number. It was a lovely encounter that I would have missed if my implants had not been delayed. I reminded myself of the many times I chose to stay in distress rather than making a choice for forgiveness and applying the lesson immediately. I wondered what the meaning of this encounter was and its importance but recognized that I had no idea. Everything is in His hands. I don't need to try to figure it out.

It is in every situation that we can choose to remember who we are and what our function is in this world. These are the kinds of events that give us the opportunities we need to practice remembering the truth. What situations or difficulties do you face today that can be transformed in the light of truth? What expectations do you need to release in order to experience peace?

In the introduction to our practice, we have some very specific instructions on how to do these review lessons. First, we do one idea in the morning and the other one in the afternoon. So it is good to pick a time of day when you plan to start the second review lesson or you might find that the day just slips by and you haven't given it the attention it requires. We continue with the process we have been using in our practice periods so far where we take a longer practice period twice a day. Now we will be focusing one of our longer practice periods on the morning lesson and the second one in the afternoon. Watch how your days go during this review period and notice how often you forget, which is an indication of how much resistance there is in the mind. But don't judge yourself when you forget. It is just another opportunity to notice the fear of awakening.

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Seven

The Consistency of the Kingdom

VIII. The Total Commitment

70 Whenever you deny a blessing to a brother, you will feel deprived. This is because denial is as total as love. It is as impossible to deny part of the Sonship as it is to love it in part. Nor is it possible to love it totally at times. You cannot be totally committed sometimes. Remember a very early lesson-"Never underestimate the power of denial." It has no power in itself, but you can give it the power of your mind, whose power is without limit of any kind. If you use it to deny reality, reality is gone for you. Reality cannot be partly appreciated. That is why denying any part of it means you have lost awareness of all of it.

71 That is the negative side of the law as it operates in this world. Yet denial is a defense, and so it is as capable of being used positively as it is of being used destructively. Used negatively it will be destructive because it will be used for attack, but in the service of the Holy Spirit, the law requires you to recognize only part of reality to appreciate all of it. Mind is too powerful to be subject to exclusion. You will never be able to exclude yourself from what you project.

72 When a brother acts insanely, he is offering you an opportunity to bless him. His need is yours. You need the blessing you can offer him. There is no way for you to have it except by giving it. This is the law of God, and it has no exceptions. What you deny you lack, not because it is lacking, but because you have denied it in another and are therefore not aware of it in you. Every response you make is determined by what you think you are, and what you want to be is what you think you are. Therefore, what you want to be determines every response you make.

74 You made perception, and it must last as long as you want it. Illusions are investments. They will last as long as you value them. Values are relative, but they are powerful because they are mental judgments. The only way to dispel illusions is to withdraw all investment from them, and they will have no life for you because you have put them out of your mind. While you include them in it, you are giving life to them, except there is nothing there to receive your gift.

75 The gift of life is yours to give because it was given you. You are unaware of your gift because you do not give it. You cannot make nothing live since it cannot be enlivened. Therefore, you are not extending the gift you both have and are, and so you do not know your being. All confusion comes from not extending life, since that is not the Will of your Creator. You can do nothing apart from Him, and you do do nothing apart from Him. Keep His way to remember yourselves and teach His way, lest you forget yourselves. Give only honor to the Sons of the living God and count yourselves among them gladly.

76 Only honor is a fitting gift for those whom God Himself created worthy of honor and whom He honors. Give them the appreciation which God accords them always because they are His beloved Sons in whom He is well pleased. You cannot be apart from them because you are not apart from Him. Rest in His love and protect your rest by loving. But love everything He created of which you are a part, or you cannot learn of His peace and accept His gift for yourself and as yourself. You cannot know your own perfection until you have honored all those who were created like you.

77 One Child of God is the only teacher sufficiently worthy to teach another. One Teacher is in all your minds, and He teaches the same lesson to all. He always teaches you the inestimable worth of every Son of God, teaching it with infinite patience born of the infinite love for which He speaks. Every attack is a call for His patience,  since only His patience can translate attack into blessing. Those who attack do not know they are blessed. They attack because they believe they are deprived. Give therefore of your abundance and teach your brothers theirs. Do not share their delusions of scarcity, or you will perceive yourself as lacking.

78 Attack could never promote attack unless you perceived it as a means of depriving you of something you want. Yet you cannot lose anything unless you did not value it and therefore did not want it. This makes you feel deprived of it, and by projecting your own rejection, you believe that others are taking it from you. One must be fearful if he believes that his brother is attacking him to tear the Kingdom of Heaven from him. This is the ultimate basis for all of the ego's projection.

79 Being the part of your mind which does not believe it is responsible for itself and being without allegiance to God, the ego is incapable of trust. Projecting its insane belief that you have been treacherous to your Creator, it believes that your brothers, who are as incapable of this as you are, are out to take God from you. Whenever a brother attacks another, this is what he believes. Projection always sees your will in others. If you will to separate yourself from God, that is what you will think others are doing to you.

80 You are the Will of God. Do not accept anything else as your will, or you are denying what you are. Deny this and you will attack, believing you have been attacked. But see the love of God in you, and you will see it everywhere because it is everywhere. See His abundance in everyone, and you will know that you are in Him with them. They are part of you, as you are part of God. You are as lonely without understanding this as God Himself is lonely when His Sons do not know Him. The peace of God is understanding this. There is only one way out of the world's thinking, just as there was only one way into it. Understand totally by understanding totality.

81 Perceive any part of the ego's thought system as wholly insane, wholly delusional, and wholly undesirable, and you have correctly evaluated all of it. This correction enables you to perceive any part of creation as wholly real, wholly perfect, and wholly desirable. Wanting this only, you will have this only, and giving this only you will be only this. The gifts you offer to the ego are always experienced as sacrifices, but the gifts you offer to the Kingdom are gifts to you. They will always be treasured by God because they belong to His beloved Sons who belong to Him. All power and glory are yours because the Kingdom is His.
