'Under One Roof': A Story About a Canadian Multigenerational Family

Four years ago, a Canadian couple, with a baby on the way, moved out of their their two-bedroom condo and into the husband's parents' spacious duplex. New E-Book Takes the Stress Out of Juggling Work and Caregiving

Taking care of a loved one, while working? AARP Caregiving Expert Amy Goyer has some tips to help you find balance. She put them in the free e-book, Juggling Work and Caregiving, which provides caregivers with practical resources and tips. Chief among them is being proactive: explain your situation to your human resources, personnel manager or supervisor, and be prepared to offer solutions to your challenges. "Be professional and affirm your commitment to your job. Consider adjusting your work schedule," Goyer says in the book trailer. "Ask about flexible hours, a fixed or compressed schedule, job sharing or part-time jobs. Can you change your work location or telecommute either temporarily or permanently?" Intergenerational Vacations Hot Among Family Travel Trends

Multigenerational vacations became a family tradition after my wife and I got married over a year ago. Those caravan rides with my parents, sister and niece took us to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. At the time, we didn't know we were part of a hot new family travel trend. "More and more families want to travel together," according to USA Today. I know we enjoyed those trips. Everyone Wins When Child-care Meets Long-term Care

In Canada, intergenerational programming happens when a long-term care facility shares its building with the child-care center. The senior residents look forward to the preschool children who visit them four times a week for arts, crafts, games and music. "I'm mesmerized by everything they do," Marjorie Dunkley, a resident, told The Spec. "I think they're fantastic." Read the full article here.

November is National Family Caregivers Month

This month the nation celebrates National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor the relatives, friends, and neighbors who care for loved ones. President Obama issued a proclamation. This year, the Children's Bureau at the Department of Health and Human Services is rolling out their campaign, Partnering for Permanency. This social media focus emphasizes partnerships necessary to foster permanency. Learn more

Hartford Creates a New Commission to Help Grandfamilies

NBC Connecticut News did a story about a commission created to help grandparents raising grandchildren. "They chose to sacrifice themselves for the life of others," Carmen Stanford, program director at Generations, which is part of Hartford's Community Renewal Team (CRT). Stanford's work at CRT got her nominated for a spot on a new commission the Hartford City Council created for grandfamilies. Learn more

Webinar Set for Grandfamilies Raising Children with Disabilities

As you probably know, we recently published a new booklet called Grand Resources: A Grandparent's and Other Relative's Guide to Raising Children with Disabilities. On Nov. 14, the guide's author -- our own Ana Beltran -- will host a webinar at 2:00pm ET during which she will answer the most frequently asked questions about resources available to those raising children with disabilities. The Better Business Bureau Offers Seniors Tips to Avoid New Scam

A new scam has the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warning seniors against giving out personal information over the phone. This scheme involves a caller, supposedly acting on behalf of the Social Security Administration, claiming that they need to verify Social Security numbers, Medicare/Medicaid numbers and bank accounts for the new Social Security cards they're mailing out. "We've been inundated with calls during the past two weeks as Medicare/Medicaid renewal gets under way," Dale Dixon, CEO for BBB, told the Idaho Press-Tribune. Learn more about BBB's tips
