In February 2014, Mayor de Blasio released the Vision Zero Action Plan. The Vision Zero plan is comprised of dozens of specific initiatives to improve vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian safety on city streets.

Today in New York, approximately 4,000 New Yorkers are seriously injured and more than 250 are killed each year in traffic crashes. Being struck by a vehicle is the leading cause of injury-related death for children under 14, and the second leading cause for seniors. On average, vehicles seriously injure or kill a New Yorker every two hours.

The City of New York is no longer regarding traffic crashes as mere "accidents," but rather as preventable incidents that can be systematically addressed. The Vision Zero Action Plan is the City's foundation for ending traffic deaths and injuries on our streets.

In support of increasing vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle safety on city streets, the Hunts Point Clean Trucks Program (HPCTP) will embrace this important initiative and require the following vehicle safety enhancements for all HPCTP trucks funded in any future grant awards.
Only vehicles properly equipped with the following Vehicle Safety Enhancements are eligible to participate: side mirrors with a split mirror design; cross-over mirrors; passenger door down view mirrors; a backup alert system; and truck side guards.

The Vision Zero View ( www.nycvzv.info) is a useful tool to see where these injuries and fatalities are occurring in your neighborhoods, business locations, and along your truck delivery and service routes. To keep you informed of Vision Zero initiatives, and how they might affect the NYC commercial trucking industry, the HPCTP Team will bring you some informative messages over the next few weeks.

By being informed about Vision Zero, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian safety in New York City.

Thank you again for your part in making the Hunts Point Clean Trucks Program a success by replacing older Class 3 to Class 8 trucks with newer, more environmentally friendly trucks. Our goal to scrap and replace 500 Hunts Point and Port Morris business community trucks is within reach. Now, not only will the South Bronx have a cleaner fleet, but a safer one as well.
