ARE HONORED
This year's top teachers in Tift County were recognized Thursday night, Feb. 20, at the 23rd Annual Excellence in Teaching Awards banquet.
The recognition is organized by the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tifton, which has been sponsoring the event for 20 years.

A dozen teachers were selected this year from the nominations received. They were awarded a plaque and $250.
This year's teachers being honored are:
Pre-K: Myra Smith, Darah Wells and Valerie Poppell
Eighth Street Middle School, seventh-grade math: Stacy Jones
Annie Belle Clark Primary, third-grade: Susan Nimmo
Omega Elementary, fifth grade: Shonta Walker

Northside Primary, third grade: Pinkey Barr

A total of 221 teachers have been recognized during the years, some more than once. Total award money given to teachers is $59,750.

DANCING STARS OF SOUTH GEORGIA
LOCAL 'STARS,' PROS TO DANCE FOR ALZHEIMER'S
The Alzheimer's Association's "Dancing Stars of South Georgia" returns at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
"It will be a fun, glitzy, sparkly event for an important cause," says Dan Phillips, development director for the South Georgia Region of the Alzheimer's Association, Georgia Chapter. "The event will mimic an episode of ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars' and will include food, drinks, dancing performances, and fun for everyone."
Local "stars" are paired with local professional dancers -- and this year's dancers includes a real star from the TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard."

TIFT COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
HAS 'WOMEN'S BUILD DAY' SATURDAY
Tift County Habitat for Humanity is having a "Women's Build Day" project on Saturday, Feb. 22. Volunteers will be adding a porch to a house that the group is building.
No experience is necessary. Instruction will be offered on site; women with all skill levels areinvited to help. The build will last from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. and will be broken into shifts, depending on the number of volunteers. Tentative shifts are 8 a.m.-Noon and 1- 5 p.m. The organization is seeking five people per shift and no experience is needed.

'ETHICS IN BUSINESS' NOMINATIONS
The Rotary Club of Tifton is seeking nominations for its annual Tifton Rotary Ethics in Business Award to recognize a local business that has demonstrated exceptional ethical behavior.
"We began this annual award last year and the first recipient was Central Jewelers," says Tifton Rotary President Andy Borem. "The award was created to recognize those local businesses exhibiting high ethical behavior and a commitment to our community."
Criteria for the award, which will go to a business physically located in Tifton or Tift County, were
developed by a committee of Tifton Rotary Club members. The nominated business must have consistently demonstrated high ethical standards of honesty and integrity in dealing with employees, customers and contractors while enhancing the economic well-being of the company and providing local jobs, opportunity and profits. In addition, the business must have participated in activities beneficial to the community beyond the provision of economic benefits of the business and must adhere to fair and truthful business practice reflected in the Rotary Four-Way Test: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIP? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? KIWANIS ART & MUSIC SHOWCASE SET FOR MARCH 20
The Kiwanis Club of Tifton is having its annual Art & Music Showcase at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 20 in the Tift County High School Performing Arts Center.
Students will demonstrate their talents in a competitive atmosphere to build self-esteem. The competition is open to Tift County students in public, private or home schools in grades 4-12. A student may enter only one category, music or art. Applications are available from art and music teachers in the schools, from Cassi Sylvester atTCHS, from Amy Henderson at Tiftarea Academy or from show coordinator Hal Henderson at 229-386-2237. Applications must be received by March 10. The local showcase is open to the public and there is no admission charge. The club will also announce the Kiwanis Arts Citizen of the Year at its showcase. CHAMBER NAMES S.T.A.R. STUDENTS, TEACHERS At its monthly membership meeting Thursday, Feb. 20, the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce recognized S.T.A.R. students and teachers from Tift County High School and Tiftarea Academy.
Student John Collin Summerlin and teacher Debbie Salter of Tift County High School; and student Greer Bullington Howard and teacher Jon Koran of Tiftarea Academy were honored and given plaques.
The Student Teacher Achievement Awards were presented by the Chamber's Business Education Partnership Committee.
