Hump Day Blues with David Owen
Wednesday, October 14 at 8 pm

Robert Johnson allegedly became a bluesman by making a midnight pact with the devil at the crossroads in Mississippi. David Owen found his calling by making a deal at roughly the same hour, a half-century later, with Bob Dylan at the corner of Preston and Carling in Ottawa. After that fateful night, David's career continued on a successful path, opening for Bobby "Blue" Bland, Big Bill Morganfield and Sue Foley, before taking a self-imposed hiatus in 2007 to focus on family. David's newest recording, "Livin Life," celebrates his long awaited return to recording and performing.

BRING YOUR DANCING SHOES TO JAZZ BISTRO THIS THURSDAY WHEN  ANTHONY TERPSTRA AND HIS SEVENTET WITH COLIN HUNTER IN THE VOCAL CHAIR WILL SERVE UP MUSIC TO GET YOU UP AND ONTO THE DANCE FLOOR.  TERPSTRA LEADS SEVEN PIECE ENSEMBLE THROUGH DANCE CHARTS THAT WILL TAKE YOU BACK TO THE ERA OF BIG BAND DANCING.

Anthony Terpstra was born in Oakville in 1952 to Dutch immigrants who wanted their son to study classical music. However, on hearing a Count Basie record (which he still has) Anthony fell in love with it and states, "I knew intuitively what was happening with the drums, the tenor solos, trumpets and the excitement and the time. I knew. I had that record memorized and had Al Cohn and Stan Kenton and Gerry Mulligan records.   In 1988 he created The Starlight Orchestra basically to play the songs and melody-oriented dance music he truly enjoyed. He was encouraged by Bob Cary, who Terpstra says is "the greatest style lead trumpet you'll ever hear" and others such as Cam Walter and Al Hirsch. Terpstra knows what an audience wants and senses when to play it. "My role as leader is to play the night: I make the sets flow and ebb and play the ongoing dynamic of the band and crowd just like a conductor, only in a Dance Band sense". The Starlight Orchestra is made up of sixteen pieces including five sax, four trumpets, three trombones, piano, bass, drums and vocalist. Anthony Terpstra's Ninetet is a unique ensemble put together, not to replace the big band, but as an added feature. Influenced by the small band writing of Marty Paich and Gerry Mulligan, the Seventet has a rich sound with clean lines, contrapuntal writing and soloing in and out of ensemble.

Colin Hunter and The Joe Sealy Quartet
Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 at 8:30 pm

Colin Hunter (vocals); Joe Sealy (piano); Paul Novotny (bass); Daniel Barnes (drums); Alison Young (saxophone).

While some people only dream of becoming artists their entire lives, others follow their dream while also pursuing brilliant careers in other fields. Such is the case of crooner Colin Hunter. Colin is the founder, owner and Chairman of the Board of the Sunwing Travel Group, comprising Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations, one of the most important leisure travel organizations in Canada.

However, Colin has always had another passion in his life....his music! A huge fan of the hit songs performed by artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole, Colin fulfilled a long-held dream in 2005, with the release of his first CD, appropriately titled "Come Fly With Me" to coincide with the inaugural flights of Sunwing Airlines.

Since then Colin has made 9 more albums, with Big bands from Ontario and Quebec, and with renowned jazz pianist Joe Sealy.

Colin has been showcased on the Canadian and world stage several times, and is a favorite on Coleur de Jazz 91.1, and JazzFM in Toronto. His amazing voice can be also be heard while flying on his airline, on channel 10.

His love of music lead him to opening a Toronto Jazz Club - JAZZ BISTRO. Colin and his wife Joan wanted to offer the public a comfortable up-scale jazz club, featuring top names from Toronto and international fame, while enjoying delicious food. Colin can often be found on his stage filling the Club with his laid back crooner classics.

JOE SEALY
An Officer of the Order of Canada, JUNO-award winning artist Joe Sealy has enjoyed a highly successful career as a musician, composer, recording artist and radio broadcaster. His 1997 Juno Award winning Africville Suite inspired Ron Foley MacDonald of The Halifax Daily News to write; "This may be the most important jazz album released in Canada this year". Joe has presented "The Africville Suite" in concert venues and at music festivals across Canada as well as Denmark, Norway and the USA. As a pianist, he has toured with "Blood Sweat and Tears" and performed with such artists as Joe Williams, Milt Jackson, Veronica Tennant, and Timothy Findlay.

PAUL NOVOTNY
Paul Novotny knows how to make the bass talk. Singers like Jackie Richardson, Holly Cole, Carol Welsman and Molly Johnson would all agree. They have called upon Paul for his melodic and rhythmic style. Paul's production of Joe Sealy's Juno Award- winning (1997) "Africville Suite" helped to establish him as one Canada's best record producers. Paul is also an established Film/ TV composer and has written and produced music for many national radio and TV commercials. As a jazz bass player Paul has performed with Cedar Walton, Geoff Keezer, Junior Mance, Don Thompson, Tommy Banks, and others. Paul is also a professor at Humber College, School of Creative and Performing Arts in Toronto.

DANIEL BARNES
Drummer, composer, producer and singer Daniel Barnes was born into an artistic family in the central hub of downtown Toronto, Canada in 1965. His recordings are available through major retail outlets, at itunes.com and through www.danielbarnes.net. Daniel was nominated "Drummer of the Year" at both the 2003 and 2007 National Jazz Awards while his work with others has thrice been nominated for Juno awards with a win in 1996 for Joe Sealy's "Africville Suite".

ALISON YOUNG
A relatively new force to reckon with in the Toronto music scene, Alison is from Ottawa where she honed her craft playing in local blues and R&B bands. After studying at the University of Toronto with Canadian sax greats Mike Murley and Kirk MacDonald, Alison has emerged as one of the Toronto music scene's hottest and most sought after reed players. Alison plays all kinds of music and has toured Canada with pop group Kelly and the Kellygirls and with the one and only Big Rude Jake.
