So here's a trick question for you wine experts...by law all red burgundy has to be what grape? From the title of the tasting you could have a 50/50 shot...Pinot Noir could be the answer but Jeffrey you say Beaujolais is really part of burgundy and there they grow gamay? Yup there is also an appellation (AOC) for burgundy called Passetoutgrains where the wine can be made up of a % of both Pinot Noir and Gamay .

So we come to the Pinot Noir VS. Gamay Smackdown! What's you grape of choice?

Pinot Noir may be the toughest grape to grow, but the effort is well worth the investment. It is a fickle grape that demands optimum growing conditions, calling for warm days consistently supported by cool evenings. Pinot Noir is a lighter colored and flavored red wine, well-suited to pair with an array of foods. Its flavors are reminiscent of sweet red berries, plums, tomatoes, cherries and at times a notable earthy or wood-like flavor, depending on specific growing conditions.

Gamay is a purple-colored grape variety used to make red wines, most notably grown in Beaujolais and in the Loire Valley . Its full name is Gamay Noir. It is a very old varietal mentioned as long ago as the 15th century. It has been often cultivated because it makes for abundant production; however, it can produce wines of distinction when planted on acidic soils, which help to soften the grape's naturally high acidity. Alas we come to the vastly under appreciated Cru Beaujolais, these wines come from the best vineyards in the north-central part of the region. They can show remarkable concentration and longevity while still boasting a bundle of Gamay flavor. These include Brouilly, Cotes de Brouilly, Chenas, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Julienas, Moulin-a-Vent, Morgon, Regnie, and St. Amour.
