Check the address on your DNA kit

GeneSeek Inc., AHA's official DNA lab, has relocated to a new facility as of April 28. The mailing address on your DNA kit may be outdated depending on when you received the kit. DNA kits requested before May 1 have the old mailing address. You’ll need to change it to the new address:

Remember to send all DNA kits to GeneSeek, not the American Hereford Association. If you send your DNA kit to AHA the turnaround time is slowed down.

Texas All Star Sale Cancelled

The 29th Annual Texas All Star Memorial Day Sale scheduled for Monday, May 26, 2014, at KB Cattle Co., Wills Point, Texas, has been cancelled. Please note that an ad for this sale was published in the May/June Hereford World as the sale was cancelled after the magazine went to print.

Handmade Quilt Supports “A Sweet Family Tradition”

Own a piece of Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) history with your support of a beautiful handmade quilt.

For $675, donors will receive:

  1. Ranch or farm name embroidered on the back of the quilt.
  2. A C.J. Brown print of an original painting with a Pennsylvania farm scene, including the quilt.
  3. A chance to bid on the original quilt to be auctioned off at the JNHE. All proceeds from the quilt fundraiser will support the 2014 Junior National Hereford Expo.

Golf Tournament Planned

The Hereford Youth Foundation of American (HYFA) will host its fifth annual golf tournament with all proceeds to benefit the foundation. Hosted in conjunction with the JNHE, the event will kick off at 8:30 a.m. July 8 at the Hershey Country Club, Hershey, Pa.

Join the Club

HYFA supporters will have the best seats in the house at the 2014 JNHE in Harrisburg, Pa. Hereford enthusiasts can join the Hereford Foundation Club and have access to the “club lounge” and “club loft” in Harrisburg as well as earn other perks for their support of Hereford youth. Club members and those interested in joining the club are invited to a welcome reception at 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 7. The “club lounge,” located in the Commonwealth Room, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, through Friday, July 11. The “club loft,” overlooking the showring, will be open while the shows are taking place Wednesday, July 9, through Saturday, July 12. There are four levels of membership, but benefits include a special membership pin, access to the VIP parking area and admittance to the club area.

Junior Deadlines are Approaching

The Spring 2014 edition of The Advantage newsletter is available at Hereford.org.

Before you know it we will all be gathering for “A Sweet Family Tradition” in Harrisburg, Pa. However, before we get to Pennsylvania, there are a lot of details that will make your life a little easier as you plan to be a part of the big event July 5-12. Please keep up with all of the happenings at JrHereford.org and also on the NJHA Facebook page and the Hereford events app, as we strive to bring you the most up to date information surrounding the largest Hereford event of the year.

Attention State Junior Advisors: The advisor handbook has been updated. View it at Hereford.org. Please refer to it as your states prepare for the JNHE contests and compete for the Super States Award.

Hall of Fame, Merit Nominations Due June 1

Nominations for the Hereford Heritage Hall of Fame and Hereford Hall of Merit are due June 1.

The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who’ve dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Hall of Merit recipients aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and the cattle industry.

PRIDE Convention Heads to Arkansas

The 2014 Faces of Leadership PRIDE Convention will be July 27-30 in Springdale, Ark. Please visit JrHereford.org for a complete schedule of events and plan to be a part of a fun-filled week of leadership, networking, touring and much, much more.


June 1 is Fall 2014 Data Deadline

All birth, weaning, yearling and ultrasound data must be submitted by June 1 to be included in the fall 2014 evaluation.


4th International Beef Cattle Welfare Symposium

Registration is now open for the 4th International Beef Cattle Welfare Symposium that will be held in Ames, Iowa, July 16-18, 2014. Speakers from the U.S., Canada, Australia, Brazil, and Ireland will address a wide variety of topics including discussions about beta-agonists, low stress cattle handling, the impact and mitigation of weaning and transportation stress and analgesic drug use. Greg Peterson of “The Peterson Farm Brothers” YouTube fame will be the guest speaker at the evening reception.

Registration for the symposium is $225 (including the preconference program) or $200 for just the scientific program if registered by July 1, 2014.

Plan to attend BIF Symposium and Convention

The 2014 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Research Symposium and Convention is set for June 18-21 in Lincoln, Neb. For nearly 50 years BIF has hosted its annual research symposium and convention. The convention serves to facilitate discussion and provide education on current issues facing the beef industry.

US-MARC (U.S. Meat Animal Research Center) will also host pre-conference tours on Tuesday (all day) and Wednesday morning. Tours can be arranged by contacting Janel Nierman at 402-762-4110.


GE-EPD Results Update

If you want genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) be sure to allow for plenty of time for the lab to get the results to you. Do not wait until the last minute. It takes a minimum of SIX weeks to get results after the lab acknowledges the sample, not when it arrives at GeneSeek.
