Festival of the Arts -  The Three Cities Art Club and the Westland Rotary Club are bringing the Festival of the Arts back to Westland for the third year in a row. This year, the Garden City Fine Arts Association is joining the two clubs as a sponsor in order to broaden the range of art offered to patrons. The Festival of the Arts will be held from Friday, October 18th through Sunday, October 20th at the Westland Mall Grand Concourse located at 35000 W. Warren Road during regular mall hours. The Festival of the Arts is a celebration of local artists, bringing fine art and photography to Westland. The art will be on exhibit for sale and to compete in the art competitions. Awards and presentations will be given out on Saturday at 1pm by guest judges who include: Senator Glenn Anderson, Westland Mayor William Wild, Garden City Mayor Randy Walker, Westland Rotary Club President Dick Isham, and the Westland Mall General Manager Carol Rutz. Patrons will also have a chance to cast their votes for their three favorite pieces of artworks, and enter for a chance to win one of many prizes.The Festival will bring returning performances by the Livonia Symphony Orchestra Brass Quartet and Jay D. Kilgus of Piano Pleasures, as well as new musical guests, the Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and The Dance Academy, performing ballet and other dance numbers. For more information please contact Marilyn Meredith at [email protected].   

 

Halloween Festival - Bring the whole family to enjoy an afternoon of free games and activities at the Hines Park-Nankin Mills Picnic Area on Saturday, October 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Children dressed in costumes are welcome.  This event includes hayrides, inflatables, a costume parade, games, trick-or-treating, entertainment and much more.

 

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location.

-There will be a meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory on Monday, October 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the Assessing Conference room located in Westland City Hall at 36601 Ford Rd.

-The Westland City Council Meeting will be held on Monday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers in Westland City hall located at 36601 Ford Road.

-The Rehabilitation Review Board will meet on Tuesday, October 22 at 4:30 p.m. at the Dorsey Center located at 32715 Dorsey.

-The Youth Advisory Board will meet on Wednesday, October 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Westland Police Department located at 36701 Ford Road.

-There will be a meeting of the Downtown Development Authority on Thursday, October 24 at 8:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall located at 36601 Ford Road.



Groundbreaking Ceremony for Downtown Park Improvement Project - City dignitaries, department heads and Westland City Council are inviting residents to join them for a groundbreaking ceremony of the $3.5 million Downtown Park Improvement Project on Wednesday, October 23 at 11:00 a.m.  This ceremony will kick off the much-anticipated reinvestment in the Central City Park site and will mark the commencement of construction on a state-of-the-art facility that will host numerous activities, incorporating concerts in the park and the All American Farmer's Market.  Future plans will include the installation of seven pavillions, a concession area with family style restrooms, and walking paths.  The ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a brief presentation and light refreshments to follow.
 
Mutt Hutt Bakery Ribbon Cutting - Mayor William R. Wild invites you to attend a Ribbon Cutting at Mutt Hutt Bakery on Wednesday, October 23 at 4:00 p.m.  Mutt Hutt Bakery is the ultimate pet bakery for pampered pets.  Products include birthday cakes, cupcakes, biscuits, doughnuts, bagels, pizza and more. Mutt Hutt Bakery is located at 36329 Ford Rd.
 
Hair Hut Ribbon Cutting - Mayor William R. Wild invites you to attend a Ribbon Cutting at Hair Hut on Thursday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m.  The Hair Hut has served the surrounding area with a location in Garden City for many years and has recently moved to the City of Westland.  Their services include: hair cutting and styling, semi permanent and permanent coloring, perms and straightening, highlights, low-lights and high fashion up-dos.  Hair Hut is located at 6055 N. Wayne Rd.
 
Noodles N Neighbors Pizza Night - Mayor William R. Wild, State Representative Robert Kosowski, State Senator Glenn Anderson, State Representative David Knesek and Wayne County Commissioner Richard LeBlanc present to you "Noodles n Neighbors Pizza Night," on Friday, October 25 at Harris Kehrer VFW Post 3323 located at 1055 S. Wayne Road.  The event will benefit the Veterans Memorial Garden of Westland and will run from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.  Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12.  There will be door prizes, live auctions and silent auctions.  Attendees are asked to please bring a gift for the homeless veterans which may include brand new items such as:  toothpaste, deoderant, clothing, toothbrushes, bath soap, shoes, combs, razors, face cloths, socks, twin size bed linens, bath towels, shaving cream, books/magazines, board games, playing cards and more.  Tickets can be purchased at the door on the day of the event or in advance at Mayor William R. Wild's office in Westland City Hall located at 36601 Ford Rd. and  include pizza, salads, bread sticks and soda.  Beer will be available for a suggested donation.  
 
Free Electronics Recycling Event - The City of Westland, Vintage Tech Recyclers and LG Electronics have joined forces to bring a free solution for responsible electronics recycling to area residents.  This event will take place on Saturday, October 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 35300 Nankin Blvd.  Residents may bring electronics which may be taking up space at home such as:  Computers, laptops, monitors, LCD's, cell phones, printers, scanners, modems, CD drives, cables, keyboards, mice, televisions, VCR's, DVD players, camcorders, cameras, game players, joysticks, telephones, pagers, answering machines, typewriters, calculators, adding machines, fax machines and copiers.  

Octoberfest - Bring the whole family to celebrate Octoberfest of Saturday, October 24 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for hot dogs, pumpkin and face painting, cider and donuts and an opportunity to meet the Police Dogs "Friday" and "Narco"  The event is free and takes place at the Dorsey Center located at 32715 Dorsey.  For more information, contact Hank Johnson at (734)444-8344

Westland Farmer's Market Held Every Thursday - The Westland Farmer's Market will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. every Thursday in the City Hall Parking Lot, located at 36601 Ford Road.  This is the ultimate site for farmers, growers and producers to sell their own products directly to the public.  Residents now have the opportunity to catch a FREE ride to the market at the following locations and times. *All times are approximate and dependent on weather, traffic, available space, etc.
