In 2012, IMLS, the MacArthur Foundation, the Urban Libraries Council and the Association of Science-Technology Centers launched a robust 18-month planning and design process for 24 teen-centered "Learning Labs" across the United States. Join us and other members of the Learning Labs community for a conversation about the project, hear about key findings from NYU's 18-month study and engage in discussion about recommendations in critical areas such as collaboration, teen engagement, space design, staffing models, outcomes and funding strategies.

The MakerSpace Movement Grows

IMLS has also announced a new initiative with the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh to build the capacity of libraries and museums to develop effective makerspaces and related programs. As part of its ongoing effort to encourage entrepreneurship and a citizenry skilled in STEM capabilities, The White House recently announced plans for a 2014 White House Maker Faire. Find out more.

Recently, Ottawa Public Library, ON, and the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa launched a unique joint venture makerspace named Imagine Space - An American Corner. First Lady Honors National Medal Recipients


On May 8, First Lady Michelle Obama presented the 2014 National Medal for Museum & Library Service, sponsored by IMLS, to 10 outstanding cultural institutions, including ULC members Chicago Public Library, Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and Mid-Continent Public Library. Later this year, StoryCorps - a national nonprofit dedicated to recording, preserving and sharing the stories of Americans - will visit each winning institution to document stories from their communities. Listen to the First Lady's inspiring remarks and watch the presentation ceremony!
