Summer Gardening Fun

This summer we are back at the McDevitt Middle School for our summer cooking and gardening class! This popular program gets middle school kids out working in the school garden with the amazing Youth Crew from the Waltham Fields Community Farm. Then kids get to do some healthy cooking with Chef Reva using produce from the garden! Healthy Waltham's program gives kids the chance to prepare and eat foods they have helped grow or harvest. Funding support was provided by Hannaford Supermarket. Check out some great photos here!

Why garden with kids? Read this inspirational article written for us by Tammy Donroe Inman, a parent volunteer, about the Stanley Elementary School garden. We are lucky to have community members who support our school gardens during the summer months when school is not in session. To volunteer in our gardens, contact [email protected]. Have a wonderful summer!

Youth Garden Clubs

We are pleased to offer Garden Clubs for kids at three Waltham housing complexes over the summer. There is still time to get involved. Please contact [email protected] to learn more!

  • Chesterbrook Gardens - Wednesdays 4:30-5:30PM
  • Dana Court - Wednesdays 11AM-Noon
  • Prospect Hill Terrace - Tuesdays 12:30-1:30PM

Outreach Market Cooking Demo Aug. 4
We'll be visiting the Waltham Fields Outreach Market on August 4! Healthy Waltham will be passing out samples of another healthy and delicious dish created by Chef Reva: stuffed collards with bulgur wheat. Similar to the more familiar stuffed grape leaves, this recipe is a new twist on an old classic. Check out the recipe on our website here.

The Outreach Market is held on Tuesday evenings in the summer and fall from 4:30-6:30PM at the corner of Cherry and Crescent Streets. This market is a great way for low income residents to purchase fresh local produce from the Waltham Fields Farm at a reduced cost. Learn more about this program here

More Healthy Recipes
Check out more healthy recipes on our website! You'll find lots of ways to eat your veggies with these creative recipes, available in English and Spanish. We are adding more all the time so be sure to check back.

Still Time to Fill out the Healthy Food Survey
Did you fill out the Healthy Food Access Survey yet? We are conducting a community survey to look at some of the challenges to accessing healthy foods in Waltham. The survey is open to all who live, work, or go to school in Waltham. Just go to our website to complete the survey and enter your name in our raffle drawing to be held at the end of the summer. Thanks for helping make the healthy choice the easy choice in Waltham!

Healthy Waltham at the Farmers' Market
Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Healthy Waltham table at the Waltham Farmers' Market on June 27! We had a great time meeting folks and passing out samples of our salad with quick-pickled vegetables and peach vinaigrette! In case you missed it, the recipe is on our website. You can also see more photos from the Waltham Farmers' Market here.
