Spectator Guidelines for Pan Am Sailing!

July 10 - 26, 2015

Toronto, ON

Spectator Boats are encouraged to come out and watch the racing both on the Lake and the Toronto Harbour.

Racing begins on Sunday, July 12th and runs until Friday, July 17th (from 11:30am to 5:00pm daily) with the Medal Rounds on Saturday, July 18th and Sunday, July 19th.

To ensure that the racing is fair, safe and not affected by your presence, please observe the following rules for being a good spectator boat:

  • Under no circumstances are spectator boats allowed closer than 100 meters from any competitor while racing is being conducted.  This means from the Preparatory signal for any classes on the course.
  • Please be aware that the Field of Play (course) is very wide at the middle of the course due to the various lay lines.
  • Marshall boats, identified by a fuchsia/pink flag with a Marshall in white, supplemented by the Toronto Harbour Police Unit, will control the "Field of Play" - you must comply with their instructions.
  • Spectator Boats are not allowed in the Exclusion Zone.  As per the diagrams (see link below), they must stay 150 meters behind the start line, 400 meters above the windward marks and 100 meters from the sides of the course below the middle of the course and then above the middle point they must stay a minimum of 300 to 400 meters from the course.
  • Sailboat should not have their sails up - as the wind shadow could affect the "Filed of Play."
  • When moving up or down the course, please ensure that you create as little wake as possible.

Ontario Sailing would like to congratulate the athletes that have qualified from Ontario at the various qualifying events for the Pan Am Games.

The team consists of the following athletes from Ontario:

  • Brenda Bowskill (Radial)
  • Lee Parkhill (Laser)
  • Danielle Boyd (49er FX)
  • Evert McLaughlin and Alexandra Damley-Strnad (Snipe)
  • Dan Borg and Liana Giovando (Hobie 16)
  • Terry McLaughlin, David Jarvis, David Ogden and Sandy Andrews (J 24)

Ontario athletes represent 11 of the 17 athletes on the full team.

We would also like to congratulate our contract coach Thomas Fogh for his two years of work with some of these athletes. Thomas spent many days and nights traveling to run camps and to do regatta support. His commitment to the athletes showed in the many days he spent on and off the water supporting this program.

This program was supported by a $150,000 investment by Ontario Sailing over the past two years with financial support by the Province of Ontario through the Ministry Tourism, Culture and Sport.

Over the weeks leading up to the Games, Ontario Sailing has committed to support the athletes through more coach support, strength and conditioning, and nutritional support.
