Michigan Animal Shelters Receive Awards for Outstanding  Performance

Tragically, half the animals who enter American shelters don't leave them alive. In Michigan, however, a growing number of communities are bucking that statistic, and saving nearly all the animals entering their shelters. For the fourth year, Michigan Pet Fund Alliance has recognized the organizations which are performing exceptional work to save animal lives.

Using the 2012 annual shelter reports that each licensed shelter is required to submit to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the shelters were grouped by size and type, then ranked by Save Rate, the percentage of a shelter's total intake which is either returned to owner or adopted out to a new family.

Based upon Save Rate, the following shelters were recognized with awards for 2012:

Outstanding Open Admission Small Shelter (less than 1,000 intake):
H.O.P.E. Animal Shelter,  94.70% Save Rate

Outstanding Open Admission Medium Shelter (1,000 - 5,000 intake):

Outstanding Open Admission Large Shelter (5000+ intake):

Most Improved Open Admission Shelter
Al-Van Humane Society, 63.23% Save Rate, up from 18.41% in 2011

Outstanding Limited Admission Shelter, 90% or better Save Rate with the greatest number of adoptions:

Humane Society of Livingston County91.30% Save Rate with 1,133 adoptions

MPFA wishes to congratulate the shelter staff, volunteers, board members, and community members of these 5 shelters for their exemplary life-saving.  It is our hope that other shelters throughout the state follow their lead and achieve similar success.
