Parent Connection

A Thankful Heart

Hello Fellow Parents!

I'm sure many of you are looking forward to spending parts of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with friends and family, including your AU student, like I am. I love this time of year and the intentional time we set aside to specifically take note of the blessings in our lives . . . or at least the most important ones. Yes, we often thank God for the good times in our lives, but on Thanksgiving we make a special point to be outwardly grateful. And, a thankful heart is a blessing in itself.

There are many, many blessings in my life for which I am thankful, and one of those is the work I do here at Anderson University. I am so fortunate to work in this community with wonderful, dedicated colleagues and vibrant, committed students! This campus is a special place, filled with special people.

Most Parent Connection newsletters have a section that focuses on individual departments or programs. I hope you enjoy learning more about AU through this information, as with this issues focus, the Department of Kinesiology. As always, I'm open for suggestions and welcome your ideas on items you would like to see in the AU Parent Connection.

One more special note . . . the Alumni Office is hosting a bus trip to Chicago on December 7th, and parents are welcome to join the group for the same price as alumni ($40). Seats are going quickly, so be sure to register soon if you're interested. Students can go for only $30, so encourage your student to take advantage of this if you think they would enjoy a day in Chicago to shop or see the sights. CLICK HERE for more information.

I wish for you all a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and many, many blessings for which your heart can be thankful. Gobble, Gobble.

Blessings to all parents who love their children.

       Department of Kinesiology

The Anderson University Department of Kinesiology (DOK) offers excellent preparation for careers in athletic training, exercise science, teaching physical education and coaching. The 132,000 square foot Kardatzke Wellness Center houses state of the art laboratories, clinical settings, classrooms, field house, dance studio and pool. Outstanding faculty and staff facilitate exceptional academic, wellness, recreation, and athletics programs, which benefit all AU students, not just those training for majors through the Department of Kinesiology.

Monica Johnston, a senior studying Exercise Science, chose to come to Anderson University because she was not only looking for a Christian university but a campus community that felt like family. Monica stated,"The best aspect of AU is the professors, they are very helpful and willing to give you their time."Exercise Science has given her the hands on experience to prepare her for the future. After graduation Monica would like to pursue a career within a hospital or rehabilitation center, or possibly become a personal trainer.

Another senior Exercise Science major, Kayla Welker, expressed why she chose Anderson University. "I didn't want to be a number. I only applied to AU and it was a huge part of my life to go to a Christian school." Kayla was very competitive in sports growing up and wanted to study Exercise Science to understand how the body functions. She appreciates the mentoring she receives from her professors, and stated "The professors are very good at helping you with networking, which makes finding a career a lot easier after graduating." After AU Kayla would like to be a personal trainer or work at a center that allows her to perform EKG's.

Anderson University supports academic success through many vehicles. The Kissinger Learning Center and Educational Support Services are two valuable resources for providing support to students as they navigate through the maze of college courses. Counseling Services is another source of support for students, as working to promote good mental and emotional health ultimately supports academic success. All three of these services are provided at no charge to students.

If your student is struggling in a class, encourage them to talk with their professor, get tutoring help, and/or join a study group. Because of the  Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy, there's much riding on your student doing well academically ... including eligibility for financial aid.

Midterm grades are available to students online. The withdrawal window for any course has been closed. For parents to be able to see this information online, their student would need to provide to them his or her login name and password.
