What's It All About? Is Singing "Kumbaya" Involved?

If you haven't attended a participant-directed conference in the past, you may be wondering just what the "M.Q. Gathering" is all about! Will people be burning sage? Are you required to know all the words to "Kumbaya"? No need to worry! Registering for the M.Q. Gathering does not buy you a one-way ticket to Woo-Wooville!

The M.Q. Gathering is a structured event that will use highly effective methods to harness the collective wisdom of the participants. The M.Q. Gathering will be driven by facilitated group discussions and exercises that will allow you to tap into the bounty of expert knowledge and innovative thinking that is synonymous with the M.Q. Community. This conversation-driven group process fosters conditions that lead to deep insights, meaningful results, and action plans--also known as collective sense-making

How Will It Work? Will I Know What I'm Doing?

Worried that without a panel of scheduled speakers the event will lack organization or focus? Put your mind at ease! The M.Q. Gathering will be guided by a structured framework and proven process. Your Hosting Team will guide the process, support discussions, document the nuggets of wisdom and ah-ha moments, and help the group understand what it is uncovering as it works together!

The Kickoff

After the Networking Dinner on the first night of the Gathering, areas of focus for the next day will be decided through a process of small group conversations, topic nominations, and group voting.

The Nitty Gritty

The following day, your Hosting Team will provide an overview of the agenda, guidance on how to get the most out of your participation, and a toolkit to use as you engage in Open Space Discussions. The Open Space Discussions will take place in small groups, each focused on one of the topics decided upon by the M.Q. Community the previous night. Your toolkit will provide everything your group needs to facilitate the conversation, stay on track, capture insights and ideas, and begin thinking about action steps. There will also be a couple of short exercises sprinkled throughout the day to keep you headed in the right direction!

The Wrap-Up

The final day of the Gathering will be focused on creating action. Through a combination of guided exercises and group work, we will harvest ideas, identify practical solutions, and create implementable action steps.
What Will I Get Out Of It? Will It Be a Worthwhile Process?

The powerful methods used during the M.Q. gathering will create open and meaningful conversations that lead to clear direction and good results. As a participant you will:
  • Identify the main obstacles and challenges you face when implementing and facilitating a holistic, values-based approach to financial planning.
  • Be provided the opportunity to pose questions, share experiences, provide resources, and propose ideas on topics that are of high importance to you and your practice.
  • Leave with concrete action steps that are applicable to your practice and your goals.
Has Anyone Done This? Are We Your Guinea Pigs?

This type of participant-driven event is tried and true. In fact, it has been used successfully and repeatedly at conferences within the financial planning industry, such as the Annual Nazrudin Meeting and the FPA NexGen Gathering. M.Q. President Carol Anderson, Vice President Amy Mullen, and select members of the M.Q. Licensee Advisory Board have been professionally trained to facilitate this type of meeting. Here's what a couple of folks who have attended these types of events have to say:

"The power of the Open Space meeting format is that nobody is guessing what the participants want to hear. The participants drive the meeting and bring their own thoughts, feelings, and issues to the table. It's current and alive. Everyone is a leader and everyone contributes to the space. Because of the freedom, there is room for creativity and the letting down of embedded assumptions."

- Marty Kurtz, CFP® | The Planning Center | Moline, IL

"There is great freedom in having a meeting organized by the participants. The meeting is much more meaningful because we talk about what we really want to talk about. It is less of an expert giving you information and more about sharing experience and knowledge between all those participating."

- Michelle Maton, CFP® | Aequus Wealth Management Resources | Chicago, IL
What Do Past Attendees Have to Say About M.Q. Events?

While the "M.Q. Gathering" is a new type of event for Money Quotient, we are not new to the event hosting game! We have been facilitating our "M.Q. Retreat" events since 2005, and if we do say so ourselves, they are always a great success! Here is what a few past M.Q. event attendees have to say:

"M.Q. events leave me feeling energized! There is something powerful about spending time with like-minded people who are committed to doing the best for their clients. I always come away with some new ideas about how I might improve my use of M.Q. tools."

- Alecia Modahl, CFP® | ALM Financial Solutions | Redmond, WA

"Having been in the financial industry for over a decade, I've attended conferences coast to coast from every major membership organization. However, there is truly nothing comparable to Money Quotient events. The blend of knowledge/training expertise with the interaction of fellow practitioners is what makes the M.Q. Community truly unique and keeps me coming back year after and year."

- Jonathan Millican, CFP® | Kinsight, LLC | Birmingham, AL

"It reenergizes me to be around like-minded professionals. The attendees at Money Quotient events care about their clients and that's what I care about. My time with the M.Q. Community helps keep me on track, gives me new ideas, and provides me the opportunity to seek input and suggestions. I leave feeling hopeful for the future of the financial planning profession."

- Steven M. Singer | Retirement Solutions | Los Angeles, CA
