Wage Increases: What's The Impact To Your Organization?
The past few weeks have seen considerable movement on wage issues at the state and federal level, which could impact millions of employees and employers alike.
In the Bay State, Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo called for an increase to the minimum wage starting in July of this year, a proposal that would raise the hourly minimum wage from $8 to $10.50 by 2016.
And in Washington, President Obama ordered the Labor Department to revise federal rules on overtime pay, which would make millions more workers eligible for extra pay if they work more than 40 hours a week. According to the New York Times, the White House said that as many as 88 percent of salaried workers are not guaranteed "time and a half" overtime pay because they earn more than the cap of $455 a week (roughly $24,000 per year). This comes on the heels of the President's proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour in stages by the end of 2015. Read more and share the impact on your organization.

45% of Nonprofits Plan to Add Jobs in 2014
A study conducted by Nonprofit HR and the Improve Group indicates a positive hiring outlook for nonprofits, including plans to create new positions.
According to a comprehensive summary of the report in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, public-policy groups, followed by health, social-services, and community-development organizations and arts and cultural groups were most likely to hire.
Among various other data, the report found that while the hiring numbers look good, nonprofits still report a lack of planning and budgeting for recruitment needs. Succession planning and employee retention continues to be a challenge.

State Dropping Health Exchange Website Firm
Massachusetts is dropping the contractor that developed the state's online health insurance marketplace, ending a troubled partnership that has left many consumers frustrated.
Legislature Authorizes $20 Million in Heating Aid
A supplemental spending bill that includes $20 million in additional heating aid was signed into law on Monday, March 17. According to the Boston Globe, advocates for low-income residents believe that the funds will result in an additional $100 per eligible household.
Rocky Start for Nonprofit Marijuana Dispensary Licensing
The Cardiac Arrhythmia Syndromes Foundation, which lost out on a marijuana dispensary license in Lowell, sued the state yesterday, claiming that its application was incorrectly scored. This is only the latest development in a turbulent launch of the licensing process that has seen many other applicants threatening lawsuits, community leaders criticizing the process, and the Governor defending it.

NONPROFIT 411: What you should know about copyright and fair use

Nonprofits, like any business, may create, sell, and otherwise use copyrighted works, but they should be attentive to any uses that may impact their funding or tax-exempt status.
As two quick examples: A nonprofit that creates materials using foundation funding should note any requirements of the foundation to attribute or disclaim the materials or to use revenues derived from their sale. A nonprofit that develops software and wishes to permit others to use it may need to grant permission only at fair market value, so as not to run afoul of "private benefit" restrictions that impact tax exempt status.
