STEMM Middle College launched in fall 2013

 

In partnership with Washington County Public Schools (WCPS), HCC recently implemented a new STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medical) Technical Middle College (STMC) to bring high school students more opportunities to earn postsecondary credits and credentials.This new program allows county high school students to finish their last two years of high school on the HCC campus.  [Read More

 

HCC named top military friendly college

 

Military Advanced Education (MAE) has awarded HCC the designation
of a Top Military-Friendly College
in its 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities. From community colleges to state universities, online universities and nationally known centers of higher learning, MAE's 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to provide service to the armed forces. First Nora Roberts Writing Institute held

 

In 2013, HCC launched the Nora Roberts Writing Institute (NRWI). Held annually each summer, NRWI is an intensive two-day conference geared towards beginning and aspiring fiction writers. More than 100 attendees from across the United States came for the inaugural year. [Read More

 

2013 outstanding faculty named

 

HCC recently recognized nine of its outstanding faculty members for the 2012-2013 academic year. Each academic division nominated one adjunct faculty member to receive an award. In addition, recently retired health and physical education professor and women's basketball coach Marlys Palmer was named outstanding faculty member of the year. Palmer taught at HCC from 1980 to 2012. [Read More

 

First Police Academy class graduates

 

In fall 2013, HCC held its first Police Academy graduation. The HCC Police Academy is an entry-level police training academy designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to function effectively in all areas of law enforcement. [Read More

 

Miller publishes first children's chapter book

 

HCC assistant English professor Amanda Miller recently published her first children's early reader chapter book, "SuperDylan and the Powers of Just Right." Miller, an avid poet and fiction writer, says that she was inspired to write the book after reading Barbara Park's Junie B. Jones chapter books to her sons. [Read More

 

Haddock-Martenot wins photography award at annual exhibition

 

Audra Haddock Martenot, a fine art photographer and adjunct instructor at HCC, won multiple photography awards at the 27th Annual Frederick Camera Clique Summer Juried Show. The show was held at the Mary Condon Hodgson Gallery on July 13.

Retired HCC professor publishes novel

 

Retired HCC Professor Emeritus Ron Ballard, recently published his first fiction novel, "Brilliant Corners." Set in 1961, the novel focuses on the lives of three characters as
they explore the emerging beat culture of San Francisco during the height of the city's jazz revolution. [Read More

 

Avila and Wright to exhibit artwork in January

 

HCC adjunct instructors Jennie Avila and Stephen Wright will exhibit paintings, pottery, and handmade drums at an upcoming exhibit at the Washington County Arts Council.

The exhibit, "Paintings, Percussion, Pots & Performances," will be on display from Jan. 3 through Jan. 28, 2014.  [Read More

HCC staff and faculty participated in the United Way Day of Caring on Thursday, Oct. 3. This year, the Day of Caring involved running a "Fun Day" for children at the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County. Thank you to all who helped!
