"A Scientific, Psychological Perspective on Values-Based Approaches to Financial Planning"

SESSION DESCRIPTION

Many financial planners use a values-based approach, attempting to help clients match their financial behavior to their values.  This workshop will provide an overview of the scientific, psychological literature on how values are organized in the human mind.  Tim will review theory and research that 1) differentiates between intrinsic goals (for personal growth, connections to others, and helping the world) and extrinsic goals (for money, image, and status); and 2) shows that intrinsic goals promote greater personal, social, and ecological well-being, as well as higher quality motivation.  We will also discuss ways to apply this literature to help activate and encourage intrinsic values in clients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
  • Understand the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic values.
  • Understand the research literature that shows a focus on intrinsic (vs. extrinsic) values facilitates greater well-being, pro-social and pro-environmental behavior, and motivation for change.
  • Utilize this understanding to activate and encourage intrinsic values in your clients and frame financial behavior around intrinsic, rather than extrinsic, aims.
"A Scientific, Psychological Perspective on How the Relationship Between Financial Planner and Client Can Catalyze Change and High-Quality Motivation"

SESSION DESCRIPTION
Life-centered, values-based financial planning rests on a high quality relationship between the client and the financial planner.  This workshop will review psychological theory and research showing that when one takes an "autonomy-supportive" (vs. "controlling") approach to relationships, people respond with a higher quality of motivation.  Specifically, supporting personal autonomy helps individuals to feel a sense of choice and connection, which thereby helps them to deeply internalize the behaviors and beliefs that have been suggested, resulting in higher quality and more persistent motivation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
  • Understand the difference between an autonomy-supportive and a controlling interpersonal style.
  • Understand the research literature showing that an autonomy-supportive interpersonal style supports high quality, persistent motivation.
  • Utilize this understanding to become an agent of change who can promote optimal motivation for financial decisions that fit clients' values and promote a happier and more satisfying life.

"Understanding Your Story to Help Clients Find Theirs"

SESSION DESCRIPTION

We each have a unique story and an innate yearning for creating a narrative of our lives, as do our clients.  Regardless of our technical capabilities, without the ability to see a client interaction as one in which we come beside them on their journey, joining our story with theirs, our ability to have a meaningful and lasting positive impact in their lives is limited. Without the ability to recognize and articulate our own story, we're unable to most effectively ignite those of others.  In order to affect the positive change we hope to see in the lives of our clients, we must journey into a territory even more adventurous than the lives of others--the territory of us.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
During this session, you will explore the following:
  • What is the most important experience you've ever had?  It might not be what you think.
  • It's hard to acknowledge our own mistakes--especially when we're trying to establish a position of authority--but vulnerability may be the most effective tool for deepening client relationships.
  • How does your story impact your practice?

"Branding: Your Super Power"

DESCRIPTION

Branding means different things to different people--at different times.  From the first sentence of an email you send, to your logo, and at every other point you interact, your brand is the impression held by others.

Sadly, financial planners often fall under the spell of 'good enough' as their firms shift and change.  They eventually miss out on the greatness an emotionally relevant brand can bring into their practices--and into their lives.

In this session, you'll learn the secret-code behind a super-powered brand where stories, unique experiences, and meaningful imagery combine to generate deeper client relationships, nurture positive change, and infuse energy into your Financial Life Planning practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
During this session, you will learn:
  • Ways to develop a brand message that builds confidence and trust.
  • How color and imagery plays a role in making an emotional connection.
  • Ideas for continuing your client connections beyond your face-to-face meetings.
  • Best practices for stand-out marketing in an experiential economy.
