Latest Developments
Sierra Business Council April 2014

It's springtime in the Sierra, which means wildflowers, waterfalls, spring skiing and sunshine.  Amidst all the bounty of recreational opportunities available there are also a number of important events designed to help us prepare for this year's drought as well as adapt and mitigate future climate change.

Below you'll read about the local Greenhouse Gas Inventory Presentations happening this month, the upcoming Fire Ecosystem and Water Yield Symposium, and a public workshop being held by the California Water Commission on the challenges facing water systems in our communities.

Finally, learn about the successful year-long energy retrofit done by Sierra Nevada Energy Watch for the historic Placerville Shakespeare Club, and be sure to check the side bar for a new job posting for our downtown Sonora office!
Fire Ecosystem Forest Management and Water Yield Symposium - May 2nd

In the midst of a year of unprecedented drought, SBC invites you to an important event - the Fire Ecosystem Forest Management and Water Yield Symposium on May 2, 2014 at the USFS Wildland Fire Training Center in McClellan, CA.  Top public- and private-sector researchers, economists and project managers will present their findings on the connection between forest management practices and impacts on water quantity and quality.

Come hear from Roger Bales and Martha Conklin, UC Merced; Carolyn Hunsaker, USFS PSW; Terri Hogue, Colorado School of Mines; Tim Ramirez, SF PUC; Bill Stewart, UC Berkeley Center for Forestry; Kristen Podolak, The Nature Conservancy; and others.

SBC is pleased to be a co-sponsor of this event, along with the American River Watershed Institute, Mountain Counties Water Resources Association, Sierra Nevada Conservancy, and USFS PSW Region 5. For registration and other event information, please visit www.firesymposium.arwi.us or contact Coordinator Otis Wollan at [email protected] or 530-320-6841.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory Presentations

This past month, SBC's Climate Planning team completed the GHG emissions inventory narrative reports and presented the results to Marysville City Council, Oroville City Council and Mariposa County Board of Supervisors. We hope that you were able to attend and voice your support for SBC and these local governments efforts to measure, analyze and begin the process towards reducing GHG emissions within their communities and within their own operations.

SBC will be presenting the results of the City of Wheatland's GHG emissions inventories on April 22nd, during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting at 6:00pm. We invite any of our members in the Wheatland area to support SBC and the City of Wheatland's efforts to measure and analyze GHG emissions within their community and municipal operations.

The community-wide and municipal-operations GHG Inventories will serve as a baseline for future planning efforts and GHG reduction programs.  The goal of the SBC Climate Planning Program is to help Sierra Nevada communities develop GHG reduction strategies that save local governments and the community members money while also improving local air quality and the health of residents.

This program is funded by California utility rate payers and administered by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, under the auspices of the CPUC.

State Government wants to hear from you on water

The California Water Commission will hold a public workshop on the challenges facing small water systems in rural, urban and disadvantaged communities on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm, at the

Ridge Golf Course and Events Center in Auburn. Many state agencies are working diligently on drought response actions this year, and the Commission is particularly interested in addressing the disproportionate impact of the drought on small communities.

This workshop, hosted by Placer County Water Agency and co-sponsored by the Mountain Counties Water Resources Association, Sierra Nevada Conservancy and Sierra Business Council, is intended to provide information to the members of the Commission and the public, and may inform future actions by the Commission. If you have questions or want more information, please contact Rachel Ballanti at CWC, or John Kingsbury with MCWRA.

Great Energy Success at the Placerville Shakespeare Club

Sierra Nevada Energy Watch recently had the chance to work with the Placerville Shakespeare Club, located in Historic Placerville, on an LED Lighting upgrade. The Placerville Shakespeare Club is a community group established in 1897 whose members gather often to study the work of respected literary authors. The club provides local scholarships, preserves a historic clubhouse, supports local interest initiatives and holds community events and social meetings.
