Here is a quick update on the latest Texas tree news and events.

Event: The 36th Annual Texas Tree Conference, Academy, Awards, Tree School and Trade Show
September 30 - October 2, 2015, Waco Convention Center
Join us in Waco for the largest and best Texas Tree Conference ever. We anticipate over 1,000 attendees as we learn about "Tree-Nectivity". Register today!
You can attend several events this year including:
- The Thursday and Friday Tree Conference and Trade Show that includes educational tracks for Commercial, Municipal and Utility Arborists, an awards luncheon, receptions and more.
- The Wednesday pre-conference Tree Academy with Dr. Chris Luley and hands-on field stations or a Spanish language Electrical Hazard Awareness Program.
- And the Friday Tree Schools for English and Spanish-speaking tree workers.

Survey: What's bugging you? A short survey to help the Texas A&M Forest
Service
We need your help! Please take a minute to answer seven questions that can help the Texas A&M Forest Service expand its research and technology transfer efforts to urban trees. TFS needs Texas arborists to identify current and future threats to our trees and the results of this survey will be used to establish research priorities.

New BMP: Best Management Practices: Lightning, Third Edition
ISA has developed a series of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the purpose of interpreting tree care standards and providing guidelines of practice for arborists, tree workers, and the people who employ their services.
This BMP describes proper installation and maintenance of lightning protection systems that can effectively prevent serious lightning damage to trees. More information here

Awards: TreeFolks Wins for Lost Pines
Bastrop work is recognized
Last month, TreeFolks was honored with a Texas Environmental Excellence Award in the Civic/Community category for reforestation work Bastrop County. To date, TreeFolks volunteers and partners have planted and given away more than one million trees to reforest the Lost Pines. Congratulations TreeFolks!

Save our Ashes - A Texas Seed Conservation Project
The emerald ash borer has not invaded Texas (yet), but there is a program run by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center that is taking a precautionary path. It involves collecting seeds from the various ash species across the state, and using them to establish a seed bank. If the worst-case scenario comes to pass and populations of ash are decimated, the seed bank will be used to repopulate the damaged areas.
The program relies on volunteers to perform most of the seed collecting. Already, almost 200 citizen scientist volunteers who have helped to collect over 125,000 seeds.

Studies continue to accumulate demonstrating the health benefits of spending time in nature, or even just looking at nature. MaryCarol Hunter, a landscape architect and ecologist at the University of Michigan, describes her efforts to determine exactly what ?dose? of nature is going to have the most impact. The early results show that the ?nature pill works.?
