How IIT Bombay is spawning the startup culture in 'Powai Valley'

Powai is a suburban neighbourhood in the North East of Mumbai, not generally associated with the fast-paced Mumbai life. The region gets its name from Powai lake, an artificial lake built 120 years ago to supply drinking water. The lake is not used for the same purpose anymore, but makes a fine setting for India's premier technology, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, which was setup in 1958.
Over the years, the college has been a budding ground for some brilliant minds that have made the nation proud. And in the last few years, it has been producing technology entrepreneurs at an astonishing rate. After our interview with the highly controversial Rahul Yadav, the Co-founder of Housing.com, I strolled through the IIT Bombay campus to get a vibe of the place. Right at the entrance, you're met with a poster of Instilive.com, a social network developed inside IIT-Bombay for efficient flow of information inside the campus.
Housing.com and Tinyowl are two heavily venture-backed companies that have been founded by IIT-Bombay alumni. Both these companies have plush offices in Hiranandani Business Park, and are growing quickly. Aasaanjobs is another company from IIT-B alumni that has grown very quickly over the past few months. Founded in 2013 by Dinesh Goel, Aasaanjobs is a recruitment portal for blue-collared and entry-level white-collared workers. It employs about 180 people across business development, sales, operations, marketing and technology. Dinesh says, "Given that IITians are the brightest minds in the country, building a tech platform is a challenge that entrepreneurs from the institute readily accept. Numerous students start working on their ideas during college itself, with the vibrant entrepreneurship culture prevalent in the institute encouraging them."
Drones are here to stay. Here are the startups seizing this space

Remember 'Interstellar' and '3 Idiots' and how both the movies featured drones? Now drones are entering real life through popular commercial applications. The Indian armed forces have been using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) for intelligence gathering and vigilance at international borders. But drones can be used for civil purposes like filming of aerial shots and agriculture management (monitoring crop growth, solar power plant performance monitoring, and spraying of pesticides over a large tract of land, etc.)
In the past two-three years, startups have recognised the business opportunity in the commercial use of UAVs in India. Some players in the field are: Drona Aviation, a SINE IIT Bombay incubated company (focuses on aerial cinematography); Chennai-based Atoms & Bytes (sells custom-made drones, drone kits, and accessories ); Bengaluru-based Edall Systems (provides industry-oriented training of UAVs for engineering students and builds and supplies UAV components to the Defense Research and Development Organisation and National Aerospace Labs); Mumbai-based startup Airpix (offers aerial photography and video production services for city planning and disaster management); and Netra by IdeaForge, founded by a group of IIT-Bombay graduates, an unmanned aerial vehicle that was used during the Uttarakhand floods rescue operations.
Alumni gift for IIT-Kgp students

KOLKATA: Courtesy their seniors, IIT-Kharagpur students will soon get foreign internships. From 2016, at least 200 students will be able to take up internships in foreign companies, the entire cost of which will be borne by the alumni.
"A student will either bag a training programme at a company founded by the alumni or he/she will be given an opportunity to work in the firm where the alumnus is working. The third option is that the alumni will sponsor the entire internship programme," said IIT-Kharagpur director Partha Pratim Chakraborty.
The concept was hatched when Vinod Gupta, the alumnus who set up Vinod Gupta School of Management, proposed to sponsor summer internships for his company as well as for the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law. "He said he will donate few international internships to IIT students. IIT authorities then felt they should ask other former students to participate in the programme," said a faculty member.

| IIT-B Gets Ready To Develop Smart Weapons And Train The Next Generation Of India's Police Forces

During an emergency, a police team rushes to the spot wearing glasses with an attached camera that sends live stream to the control room. This isn't a scene out of a movie. These glasses are part of a technology called Etherhawk, one of the several prototypes designed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at its Powai campus for use in crisis situation.
Having secured a Central government grant of around Rs 100 crore, the IIT-B is all set to launch the National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS) at the Powai campus, which will have the dual responsibility of developing deployable technology for the state and the central police forces, and training the state police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The IIT-B received the approval of the funds from the Department of Electronics and Information Technology of the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology on Monday. Over the past two years, about 15 IIT faculty members from the electrical, mechanical, and aerospace as well as computer engineering departments have been working on development of technology prototypes.

IIT Scientists Make A Earthquake Resistant House - From Leftover Tyres!

IIT Roorkee scientists have used recycled rubber tyre pieces to formulate construction material that is earthquake resistant. Pankaj Agarwal, from the Department of Earthquake Engineering told Hindustan Times: "This is based on interlocking of pre-cast slotted concrete blocks with the help of energy dissipation links. These links are prepared by recycling pieces of rubber tyres laminated by very thin steel plates. These links not only restrict the movement of each concrete block is in all possible directions but also dissipate the energy through yielding under extreme earthquake loading conditions."
Agarwal described that these links allow energy to be dissipated through the concrete blocks, without damaging the building. IIT has tested the technology under the strongest earthquake conditions (seismic zone V) using a shake table testing facility. The model was to be used for single storey buildings, and IIT was planning to test it for double storey buildings.
Railways to sign MoU with IIT-BHU for research work

To get better raw material for technology in development of Railways, Union Minister Suresh Prabhu is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with IIT-BHU for research work in this regard. Prabhu will visit Varanasi on coming Monday to sign the MoU. The ministry has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for research work to be conducted at IIT-BHU this financial year. On Thursday, MoS for Railways Manoj Sinha said a 'Malaviya Chair Committee', chaired by Sinha's advisor R K Verma, will be set up at the institute to supervise research work.
The chair is being named after Madan Mohan Malaviya - the founder of BHU. It will work towards developing new materials to be used in various assets of Railways. "The ministry has released Rs 5 crore for IIT-BHU for conducting the research... It will help find out ways to better prepare assests - from bogies to tracks," said Sinha.
Narendra Modi likely to inaugurate IIT-Patna campus on June 30

With Bihar assembly elections around the corner, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to make a mark in the state. In tune with this strategy, PM Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Technology-Patna at the end of this month.
According to sources in the Human Resource Development Ministry, IIT-Patna has been informed that Modi is expected to inaugurate its permanent campus on June 30. In case that does not work out due to logistical issues, HRD Minister Smriti Irani will do the needful in the first week of July. Sources say that either way it is going to be a high profile inauguration with the elections due later this year.
IIT-Patna, one of the six new IITs established by an Act in 2008 by the UPA government, has been operating out of a transit campus in Patliputra since.
State to tie up with IIT Roorkee for Smart City project
The State government will soon tie-up with IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand, for the Smart City project.
Ashok Mishra, Chairman-Board of Governors, IIT Roorkee, who was here for the inauguration of the Sustainable Urban Planning for Smart Cities initiave said that IIT Roorkee will be acting as a facilitator between Karnataka and other IITs in the country for better solutions. There are about 10,000 to 12,000 IIT alumni residing in Bengaluru and they are eager to take part in this initiative to make Bengaluru a better place to live in. IIT Roorkee would advise urban local bodies on the various aspects of urban development, he added.
The event was organised by IIT Roorkee and the State Urban Development department.
'No clarity'
Earlier, Karnataka Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee said that the State is still "smarting" under the Centre's Smart City concept.
"The Centre has no clarity in the matter. It is yet to decide whether people should become smart or the cities should. A Smart City is one which should be a happier and a better place to live in," he said.
Mukherjee said that the Centre had announced Rs 8,000 crore for 100 Smart Cities (Rs 80 crore each) and that the money had not reached the State. He also said that the amount allocated was insufficient.
App demystifies local train routes

MUMBAI: Train services in the city will now be made more accessible to Mumbaikars as a student from IIT Bombay has developed an app, called MRM ( Mumbai Rail Map), which aims to make commuting simpler. The MRM has also been put up at Bandra and Dadar stations as part of a pilot project and will shortly be seen at other stations. This has been done under the initiative of the 'Mumbai Transformation project' - a collaboration between the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) and IIT-Bombay.
The maps are also available as a free app on Google Play Store and Apple store. Jaikishen Patel, student of Industrial Design Centre (IDC) in IIT-B, said, "The app stands out from other apps in this category as it treats every user as someone who travels for the first time. The app only asks the source and the destination and gives the train schedules accordingly. It is designed for the new commuter who is scared of Mumbai locals."
Apart from offering train schedules of Western, Central, Harbour, Trans-Harbour Metro, Mono, Nerul-Uran Railway Link and the shuttle express from Vasai to Roha.

From a small student base of 5, she had expanded her dance institute to over 150 students nationally in the US, with multiple virtual dance centers! Using social media and collaboration technologies, she had shown how technology can be a distance killer. In a world where dance or any form of art is regarded as highly personalized and high-touch instruction driven, this little-known teacher had made waves by using social media and video sharing technology to create virtual classes with a "secret" recipe.
