The School of Divinity regularly throughout the academic year sponsors and/or supports lectures, workshops and other activities that are not required and that are not credit-bearing but that enhance students' overall learning experiences. In Concert: Sherry Cothran

Thursday, February 13, 7:00pm, Little Chapel - Salem College

United Methodist Ministerand Singer-Songwriter Sherry Cothran will not only be preaching in chapel on Thursday, but she will give a concert later that evening in the Little Chapel on the campus of Salem College. Also, the drummer from Sixpence None the Richer - Dale Baker - will be joining her.

 

 

Take Note: Resume Workshop & Mock Interviews

On Wednesday, February 19, 11:00am - 12:25pm, Pathways in Ministry will offer two great opportunities for you to prepare for summer jobs and full-time work after divinity school. Jill Crainshaw and Chris Copeland will host a Resume Workshop in Wingate 202. At the same time, we will offer an opportunity for you to participate in Mock Interviews to practice your interview skills and receive helpful feedback. These mock interviews will be led by faculty and staff members. If you are interested in participating in a mock interview, please email Nic Williams with your name and the job and setting for which you like to interview (e.g., youth minister in a church, chaplain in a hospital, executive director of a non-profit, etc.), no later than Wednesday, February 12. This is a great hands-on opportunity to build your interview skills, so don't miss out!

Seminar on Non-Violent Social Change
Interested in dedicating a week of evenings to exploring themes of civil rights and social justice?
The Seminar on Non-Violent Social Change seeks to aid justice advocates develop skills and gain historical perspective for advancing current social issues in their communities. The Seminar will be held February 17-20, 2013 in Farrell Hall from 6-9pm each evening. Selected participants will be expected to attend every night of the seminar as well as several pre-seminar screenings of "Eyes On The Prize". Find out more and apply to participate now.
 

  

Summer Ministry Internships

Generous gifts from donors, foundations, and congregations make possible several summer internship awards each year. Lunch with Dean O'Day

During the spring semester, Dean Gail O'Day will host several opportunities for 3-4 students to have lunch with her. These "lunch with the dean" events provide an opportunity for her to get to know new and returning members of the Divinity community, and give you the chance to share your thoughts, perspectives, ideas, innovations, and comments. FAFSA
This is to remind you that if you have not already applied for federal student aid for the 2014-2015 school year, you can do so now using FAFSA on the Web.  Go to www.fafsa.gov, select "Login" to log in and you will be given the option to complete a FAFSA Renewal that has much of your application data from last year. You will need your Federal Student Aid PIN to access your 2014-2015 FAFSA on the Web application.  If you have forgotten your PIN, you can request a duplicate once you login.
 
 
Mental Health First Aid Certification Training
Tuesday, February 25, 8:00am - 5:00pm, Goodwill Industries, University Parkway
The Mental Health Association in Forsyth County is co-sponsoring a one-day certification training in Mental Health First Aid with the UNC School of Social Work Behavioral Healthcare Resource Program. This training is excellent for those in the field of mental health, social work, human services, non-profits, education, clergy, or those who are graduate students and other interested citizens who want to learn more about mental health, mental illness, and how to correctly help someone in distress or crisis.. Denominational Day: Alliance of Baptists
Tuesday, February 25
Join us for community worship as Cody J. Sanders, co-coordinator of the Racial Justice and Multiculturalism Community within the Alliance of Baptists and a PhD candidate in pastoral theology care at Brite Divinity School, Forth Worth, Texas, will lead us in worship. He is the author of Queer Lessons for Churches on the Straight and Narrow: What All Christians Can Learn from LGBTQ Lives. Following chapel, all are invited to community lunch hosted by the Alliance of Baptists. 

For those students who are affiliated with the Alliance of Baptists or are interested in learning more, Cody Sanders, Paula Dempsey, and other local clergy will also be available to discuss affiliation with Alliance, ways to navigate the ordination process, and how to find a ministry position.

"Foodways and Roadways" Film Screening and Panel
Monday, February 10, 5:00 - 7:00pm
Auditorium and Mandelbaum Room, ZSR Library

"Foodways & Roadways" is a 20 minute film featuring African American community members who tell the story of community change in Winston-Salem precipitated by Interstate 40 and Highway 52 with particular reference to food access. Jessica Pic, one of the producers, will talk about the evolution of the Foodways & Roadways project, followed by the screening and panel discussion with community members.



Artists of the Holocaust: A Collection of Short Films
Wednesday, February 12, 4:00 - 5:00pm, Main Stage of Scales Fine Arts Center
In collaboration with Yad Vashem Museum in Israel, Wake Forest students produced short films on select artists of the Holocaust. These films tell stories of men and women who created art under the most extraordinary and horrific circumstances, including those who were partisans and fought against the Nazis, and others who were prisoners in concentration and slave-labor camps.


Reading by Kiese Laymon

Kiese Laymon is a black southern writer, born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. Laymon attended Millsaps College and Jackson State University before graduating from Oberlin College in 1998. He earned an MFA from Indiana University in 2003 and is the author of the novel, Long Division, and a collection of autobiographical essays called How To Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America (both from Agate Bolden). Laymon has written essays and stories for numerous publications including Gawker, ESPN.com, Esquire.com, Longman's Hip Hop Reader, the journal, Politics and Culture and Mythium. He is a contributing editor at Gawker and frequently blogs at kieselaymon.com. Laymon is currently an Associate Professor of English and co-director of Africana Studies at Vassar College.


Jihad: Past and Present

Visiting Professor of Religion, Leah Kinberg (Tel Aviv University) will explore the contemporary and historic meanings of Jihad as a fundamental religious concept. The term Jihad carries vehement arguments with formidable political and social implications. Dr. Kingberg will analyze Jihad, follow its uses, and explore its nature as it has changed.


"The Future of Political Theology in a Pluralistic World"

Charles Mathewes, Carolyn M. Barbour Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, will give this year's Finch Lecture, sponsored by HPU's Department of Religion and Philosophy. Mathewes is one of the most talented Augustinian political theologians. Find out more here.
