NEWS AND RESOURCES
E-Rate
President Obama's recent State of the Union address affirmed his commitment to advancing digital access and equity, specifically by bringing high-speed internet access to virtually all U.S. schools within 5 years. While applauding this high-profile shout-out, ULC issued a public response calling for "equal opportunity" for libraries: "Libraries are the nation's No. 1 source of Internet access providing computers and Wi Fi....To productively participate in today's economy, we depend on computers and Internet access to apply for jobs, submit college applications, complete GEDs and take online classes."

Following the President's address, both The New York Times and The Washington Post have reported that the FCC will announce that funding for the nation's E-Rate program will double from $1 billion to  $2 billion in 2014 and 2015. What an opportunity this presents!

E-Books
Library Journal just published the 2013 survey of Ebook Usage in U.S. Public Libraries. When this annual study began in 2010, e-books were still an emerging presence in libraries. Demand crested in 2012 and in the past year, LJ reports that, "Things have settled down....demand has tempered and collections are stabilizing, while circulation continues to rise." Download and read the study results.

COSLA's National Digital Reference Guide
COSLA has just published the 3rd edition of the "Reference Guide to National Projects: Digital Literacy, Broadband Adoption and Digital Inclusion." Download the guide and be sure to check-out the ULC-led Edge Initiative on page 6.
