CURBSIDE PICKUPS RETURNING
TIFTON 'RECYCLING'
CITY RECYCLE INITIATIVE
Eleven years ago this July 1, the City of Tifton stopped
picking
up recyclable
waste at homes and businesses in the city because of cost considerations.
Residents
instead were instructed to take their recyclables to several specified locations.
This move sparked criticism among some Tiftonites, especially older ones who said it was difficult for them to get out to the designated recycle sites.
But this summer, curbside pickup of recyclables is returning to the city. Since January, Tifton has contracted with Golden Environmental for city garbage pickup, and Golden will begin picking up recyclables in early August. Recyclables will be picked up every two weeks, on the same day as customers' garbage is collected.
New recycling bins will be delivered to city customers during July in
anticipation of the August start-up.
At a recent Tifton City Council meeting, City Attorney Rob Wilmot said the recycling plant in the industrial park is owned 50-50 by the city and county, and a lease agreement is being developed for Golden Environmental to take over its operation.
Residents with questions about the recycling initiative may call Golden Environmental at 229-382-0309.

THE COUNTRYSIDE ON SATURDAY
The Tiftarea Greenways Association is partnering with the Wiregrass Farmers Market and the Tift CountyRecreation Department for the third annual Wiregrass Bike to Farm Tour on Saturday, June 27.
The cycling event celebrates local agriculture and promotes cycling in the community. Participants ride up to seven sites of agricultural interest in Tifton and Tift County, where they tour some aspect of food production or sustainable agriculture. A light local lunch will be provided at the end.

For those riders wanting a longer ride, there is a 3-mile additional spur (one way) route that will take cyclists to a large commercial vegetable farm specializing in Southern beans and field peas. Participants will get brief tours of each site before moving on to the next.

ABAC CAMPUS HOUSING STILL AVAILABLE
Students who want to take advantage of living on campus may apply now for rooms that are still available for the fall semester at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Dr. Chris Kinsey, residence life director, said ABAC Lakeside and ABAC Place are at 86 percent occupancy for the fall term which begins on Aug. 12. The two complexes, which house almost 1,300 students, have been filled to capacity for the past two years when ABAC was the only college or university south of Macon in the University System of Georgia to see back-to-back fall term increases in enrollment.
"Signing up for housing early gives students the best opportunity to get the room type and roommate of their choice," Kinsey said. "Even when the student does not request a specific roommate, signing up early allows the student and Residence Life the best opportunity to make a successful roommate match."
Kinsey said ABAC Place is an apartment style facility designed to provide upperclassmen a comfortable home while encouraging academic excellence. The units are mainly four-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments. There are a limited number of three-bedroom and Terrace Level apartments. Every student has a private bedroom in ABAC Place, which opened on Jan. 9, 2004.
ABAC Lakeside opened as a home for ABAC's living and learning communities on Aug. 20, 2007. It provides an opportunity for freshmen to start their college careers with a home and a program specifically designed for their needs. Lakeside units are divided into two private bedrooms and a shared bathroom or two shared bedrooms with two shared bathrooms.
All rooms at ABAC Place and ABAC Lakeside are furnished. Students supply only the basics such as bedding and bath supplies. Students add to their rooms with throw pillows, photos, and other accessories to help with the transition of living away from home. Kinsey said students will begin moving in on Aug. 8.

'JERSEY BOYS' TRIBUTE BAND COMING FOR LIBRARY BENEFIT DINNER & DANCE
"Let's Hang On!" -- the Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons tribute group -- is coming to Tifton on Thursday, Sept 17, for a gala night of fine food, fine music and dancing to the many hits from the iconic group that inspired the smash Broadway musical "The Jersey Boys." Sponsored by the Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation, the dinner and show at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center is the foundation's annual fundraiser for the public library, aiding the library in providing children's and community programming, and in providing materials and other programs. The tickets for the show only go on sale Aug. 15. Prices are $35 for SHOW ONLY and DINNER/SHOW is $70. Sponsorships are available from $500 to $3,000 and, depending on sponsor level, include one or more tables for eight for dinner and show at this black-tie optional event. The tribute band "Let's Hang On!" includes seasoned entertainers who are preserving the music and style of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, capturing the trademark vocal virtuosity, tight harmonies and crisp choreography that made The Four Seasons one of the greatest vocal groups of all time. The show pays tribute to their many classic songs, such as "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk Like A Man," "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You," "December '63 (Oh, What a Night)," "Rag Doll," "Let's Hang On (to What We've Got)," and many more mega hits of the '60s, all presented in a high-energy and polished production. |
Early voting is already underway
in District 155.
Election Day is July 14.
I appreciate your support!

BE SMART UNDER THE HOT GEORGIA SUN,
HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY
With temperatures already in the mid 90's, the Ga. Department of Public Health (DPH) is urging Georgians to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat and sun and to limit strenuous outdoor activity to prevent heat-related illnesses.
"Extreme heat can lead to very high body temperatures, brain and organ damage, even death," said DPH Commissioner Brenda Fitzgerald. "It's important to stay cool and hydrated in extreme temperatures to avoid serious health effects like heat exhaustion and heat stroke."
Heat stroke is a serious illness characterized by a body temperature greater than 105 degrees. Symptoms may include dry red skin, convulsions, disorientation, delirium and coma. Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat stroke that may develop from a combination of several days with high temperatures and dehydration. Signs of heat
exhaustion include extreme weakness, muscle cramps, nausea or headache.
To protect your health when temperatures are extremely high:
- Drink more fluids, regardless of your activity level.
- Stay in an air-conditioned place.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- NEVER leave infants, children, older adults or pets in a parked car.
- Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
- Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
