PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Greetings to all BCGS Members and Friends,

What a winter we've had...looking at the bright side, I hope you've all been able to use the many snow days to do more research, as I have.  Only one more month until Spring - hang in there!

This February marks the two year anniversary of the Organizational Meeting of the new Bucks County Genealogical Society.  Thanks to all of you, our Society is thriving!  To see how far we've come, check out the article In this newsletter on the history of the organization.

We had a record 70 attendees at our February meeting with Michael Hait on DNA!  We hope you will all join us for our March meeting with Larry Fermi on "Crossing the Pond:  Finding Immigrant Origins".

By mid-February, our membership count was 142, with renewals coming in daily.  We'd love to have you renew your membership, or join as a new member, and help us reach our goal of 200 members by the end of the year!

And, we hope you are enjoying our new free, searchable database.  If you have transcriptions of Bucks County genealogical records, please donate them to help other researchers!

Warm Regards,

Christine Roberts

CROSSING THE POND:

FINDING IMMIGRANT ORIGINS

This presentation by Larry Fermi discusses how to use United States records to help determine the country, province or city of origin of an immigrant ancestor or relative. This covers methodologies as well as documents like Birth, Marriage and Death certificates, Census records, Military records, Naturalization forms, Social Security records, Passenger Lists, etc.

About the speaker:

Larry Fermi has spent many years in front of an audience doing presentations in the corporate world. Also, as a part-time actor in countless community theater productions since 1971 as well as a stand-in on movies and a background extra in movies, soap operas and cable television series, Larry has honed his skills in front of an audience. He was a long-time member of the Monmouth County Genealogy Society's Education Committee as well as serving as their Vice President and Program Chair from 2003 to 2005 and is a popular speaker on basic and advanced genealogy related subjects in the greater NY metropolitan area as well as nationally. He has been performing in depth Family History research since 1989 with a focus on European immigration during the peak periods of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He is also a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society, the Genealogical Speaker's Guild and the Genealogical Society of New Jersey. As a researcher, Larry has also been featured on CNN's Open House program and NY Public Radio's Cityscape Public Affairs show talking about family and house history.

BCGS Beginnings
by Christine Roberts

It all started in 2011 when I wanted to join my local genealogical society.  I have no Bucks County ancestors, but wanted to meet other genealogists, attend local educational events, and volunteer for projects. There had been a society in Bucks County since the early 1980's, but I learned that it was no longer active.   And, after doing some online searching, I found that most Bucks County data wasn't available on the internet, and what was online was scattered in a variety of places.

So, I felt there was a gap which needed to be filled.  From a purely selfish standpoint, I had a need to find other genealogists in the area, but from a records accessibility perspective, it seemed that there was much to be done to assist long distance researchers who couldn't visit our local repositories.

I began reaching out to others to gauge interest.  I researched how to form a genealogical society, and why genealogical societies fail.  It seemed that many attributed the failure of societies to a lack of volunteers and the advent of the internet.  I felt strongly that genealogists still need that in-person connection with others with the same interests, even if their research is done online.  I knew I did.

So I filed incorporation papers for Bucks County Genealogical Society, Inc. on 9 January 2012, and began developing a website, searching for a meeting place, contacting potential speakers for programs, writing the Bylaws, contacting local researchers, and developing an email list.  Eight people attended the organizational meeting on 18 February 2012:  Lorraine Kish, Marguerite Mogila, Steve Williams, Lisa Chud, Annette Eubank, Karen Nilsen, Gerri Dauer, and me.  The Bylaws were accepted, elections held, and dues and meeting fees were set.

Monthly meetings were held in the Rose Gallery at the David Library.  Over the course of the following months, membership began to grow,, more people stepped up to volunteer, and by the end of 2012 we exceeded our goal of 100 Charter Members, ending the year with 117 members.  The elections held at the first annual meeting in November 2012 resulted in a full eight-member Board for the following year.

Looking back on the last two years, the efforts of many volunteers and significant milestones come to mind.  The firsts:  the first website (www.buckscountygenealogicalsociety.org), the first project (1940 US Census Indexing), the first monthly meeting (31 Mar 2012), the first speaker (Annette Eubank), the first Board (Annette Eubank, Gerri Dauer, Katharine Hazlett, Marguerite Mogila, Erin Collins, Ken Souders), the first member (Karen Nilsen), the first Annual Meeting (Nov 2012), the first time we used the upstairs room at the David Library (May 2013).

The 2013 Board took us to the next level (Nancy Heath, Cathy Ivins, Pat Gessner, Marguerite Mogila, Mary Butash, Jeff Sipler), with the new website launched in May 2013, the online database launched in January 2014, the receipt of donations of both electronic and physical research material, and the 2013 membership growth of 35% to 170 members by the end of the second year. And with the addition of Joann Cosgrove on the Board for 2014, we are ready to take on the third!

It is amazing to reflect on it all and realize what we have accomplished in only two years.  I know that you all, like me, have enjoyed making new genealogy friends, attending great educational meetings, and working to improve online access to our local records to help long distance researchers.  We can only imagine the great work we will be able to complete over the next decade. As Cathy Ivins would say, "We rock!"

COMMENT CORNER

From a new member:  "I am delighted to be part of this organization. Genealogical studies have been a fairly recent hobby, but I have made significant progress with multiple family branches. I am looking forward to speaking to anyone with information about Daniel and Joseph Stradling, residents of Bucks County from the late 18th to early 19th centuries."  Greg Palmer [email protected]
