Hello

Our recent Gala was a BIG success! Not only did we achieve our target but we actually exceeded it by $6,000!

Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves, including County Treasurer, Dan McAllister, who worked for Susan Golding on the City Council back in the early days of the CHCDC:

"What a spectacular event Saturday evening! You all should be very proud of the successful Gala. More importantly, the work you continue to do in the City Heights Community is outstanding and serves as a great example to all communities throughout San Diego County with the vision, tenacity and hard work that you all do."

Green Bike Lane Installed in City Heights

The second green bike lane ever installed in the City of San Diego has been    installed  in City Heights on 54th Street near University Avenue. The standard bike lane was upgraded with green treatments to alert bicyclists and motorists of the conflict point on the north-west corner of the 54th St & Uni Ave intersection.   The treatment also includes bike lane dashes in the conflict point and a "Yield To Bikes" sign with an image of a green bike lane; the first of its kind in San Diego.

The green bike lane was installed by the City in response to City Heights CDC's request on behalf of the City Heights Built Environment Team (BET); a group of residents advocating for a health-supportive built environment.  Residents and BET members have been raising the profile on the need for improved safety at this intersection for 2 years.    The intersection still needs a lot of work, particularly for the safety of pedestrians and folks getting on/off the bus.  We see the green bike lane as an important step.

We hosted a Bike To Work Day Pit Stop on May 21 at the intersection to celebrate the green lane and to thank the bicyclists of the corridor for being bike commuters.
Thanks to Mayor Filner, Councilmember Emerald, City of SD Department of Transportation, and community stakeholders for you commitment to improving quality of life for people who walk, bike, and ride transit near the 54th St & University Ave intersection - City Heights' most underserved multi-modal gateway.
City Heights Celebrates Women Micro-Enterprise Graduates

Aster Keleta and Julie Rice
April 13th the first class of seven women graduated from the Micro-Business   School hosted by City Heights CDC and Helping Women Help Themselves (HWHT).  The 6-hour school was free to participants and designed to introduce women to the fundamentals of start-up, product development, marketing and business management.

Joe McCloskey, founding board member of Helping Women Help Themselves, worked on his micro-enterprise business curriculum for years, honing it carefully as a special project in which he was personally interested.  As a resident of San Diego County and an advocate for women's success, he enthusiastically reached out to the women in the workshop, bringing his expertise and his passion to the topics. Julie Rice, Helping Women Help Themselves Executive Director, has worked with women's micro-enterprise programs and numerous not for profit organizations. Joe (pictured below with CHCDC Economic Development Manager Cindi Fargo and members of the graduating class) and a small group of new board members are the founders of the newly launched HWHT.

The Micro-Business School's first seven women graduates are residents of communities throughout San Diego County, including some from City Heights. Among their many interests, women in attendance were pursuing gift basket retail, custom clothing, organic skin care products, real estate, food service and special events enterprises. Included in the group was also a local author working on the promotion of her book.

City Heights business woman, Aster Kelata, owner Awash Restaurant (pictured above with Julie Rice) was among the first group of graduates. All graduates receive continuing technical assistance from HWHT, are networked together and can take advantage of an on-line marketing site provided by HWHT. Helping Women Help Themselves has partnered with ACCION to provide micro-credit opportunities for graduates.

Workforce Development -

Sy immigrated to the US 4 years ago from Cambodia. She doesn't speak any English and due to language and cultural barriers was unable to get a job.
Sy working at China Wall Express

A month after enrolling in the CDC Workforce Development Program, Sy is now participating in On-The-Job Training (OJT) with China Wall Express as a food server and cashier. Funded by Price Charities, the CHCDC On-The-Job Training program subsidizes new employee training and helps job seekers with multiple employment barriers to find employment.  Sy is very happy and pleased with the program. After completing the OJT, Sy will be hired permanently at China Wall Express.
