Local Foods Panel Monday, May 5 , 2014, 11:30 am-1 pm Greenville Chamber of Commerce 24 Cleveland St. Greenville, SC 29601 In partnership with Edible Upcountry, Greenville Forward is excited to host its first local foods panel discussion during its Green quarter programs. The demand for local food in Greenville seems to be skyrocketing. A quick visit to the TD Saturday Market in downtown Greenville or rush to pick up the latest copy of Edible Upcountry from the Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery demonstrates the growing interest in supporting Greenville's local food system. Whether you're a local foods enthusiast or just like to eat, we invite you a lunchtime panel discussion with representatives from the farming, non-profit, restaurant and local government industries. Moderated by Edible Upcountry co-founder and publisher, Sam Wallace, the panel will explore why purchasing local food is important and how to support a vibrant and robust local food system. You may bring your own lunch or join us for a fresh, healthy, and, of course, local lunch delivered by bike from the Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery. Click here to register.

Locavores: Eating Close to Home
Thursday, May 8, 2014 @ 11:45 am
Greenville Chamber of Commerce
Cost: $10 for lunch, $8 for Members
In seeking to be the "greenest" Greenville in the U.S., many believe it is important to eat locally. Food miles, the distance food travels from production to consumption, is becoming an important indicator of sustainability for a community. For example, the average American plate features at least 5 different ingredients from outside the U.S. (NRDC), with many health and environmental consequences along the way. In contrast, there is a growing movement of "locavores" who believe it is important to eat food grown within a certain radius of their community. In response, many restaurants are now featuring local ingredients and farmers' markets are becoming increasingly popular.
But what does it really mean to eat local? What are the real costs of eating foods from around the world? Is it possible to eat a completely local diet? And can everyone afford to eat local products?
Food is something we all have in common, so whether you're a local food enthusiast or just like to eat, come join us in this important community conversation.
Momentum is a monthly series of intimate community conversations on a variety of topics ranging from social services to youth engagement. These conversations encourage us to get involved in the daily happenings of Greenville. By creating conversation and collaborations, these monthly programs create momentum within Vision 2025.
