Friends of Carroll Park News Bulletin
September 2013

Greetings! Please pass along this bulletin to friends and neighbors who might be interested in Friends of Carroll Park events and/or volunteer opportunities!

CARROLL PARK KIDS' CONCERT SERIES WRAPS UP THIS SUNDAY, 9/22!

Fittingly, our last kids' concert of the season will take place on the last day of summer, this Sunday, September 22. Our concerts team is throwing a disco dance party for the whole family, featuring both a DJ and a live band! Come by at 2:00 p.m. for a lesson in how to boogie, then dance the summer away until 5:00 p.m.

Special thanks to our concert series sponsors: 16 Handles, Councilman Brad Lander, Kidville, MiniMax, The Moxie Spot, and Smith Canteen. In case of rain, stay tuned to the Facebook pages for the park and the concert series for alternate (indoor) location information.

MEET THE LATEST BROOKLYN NET!

  null

After years of watching trash cans hauled into the middle of the Valentino ball field, we did a straw poll of some of our field hockey and soccer players, and based on their expert advice, we have invested in a proper net for use within the park!

To prevent theft or vandalism, the net resides inside the bocce court adjacent to the ball field. Anyone is welcome to pull it out when the bocce court is unlocked, but please be sure to put it back when finished. If you are a regular player and would like to make arrangements for use of the net during park hours, please email us at [email protected]

INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE

IN CARROLL PARK

We, the volunteer membership of Friends of Carroll Park, are disturbed and concerned at reports of recent violence in and near the park. Since there is no full time Parks & Recreation or police presence in the park, it is vital that members of the community call 911 to report any and all suspicious activity. The 76th Precinct has responded to community concerns by stationing a uniformed officer inside the park from 3:00 to 6:00 every afternoon for the foreseeable future. We appreciate these efforts and will continue lobbying the NYPD for increased uniformed patrol throughout the neighborhood to help prevent future incidents

HOUSINGWORKS DONATION BIN INSIDE ROBERT ACITO PARK HOUSE!

In case you missed the news when it arrived in June, we'd like to call your attention to another community service feature: Carroll Park's Robert Acito Park House is now an official clothing and textile drop-off site for the  re-fashioNYC program!

Here's how it works: salable goods are dispatched to HousingWorks thrift shops to help them fight homelessness and HIV/AIDS; non-salables are recycled by the Department of Sanitation. Win-win!

Drop off your donations during any Friends of Carroll Park event. DO NOT LEAVE BAGS OUTSIDE THE PARK HOUSE OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE PARK.

Acceptable items: any fabric, including clean clothing, towels, linens, curtains, or clean rags; as well as shoes and accessories such as belts and handbags. No other household items will be accepted.

MUCH MORE TO COME!
