St. Paul's Church

June 30, 2015

Dear St. Paul's,

I wanted to share the opening remarks of the sermon which I delivered this past Sunday in response to the recent Supreme Court decision making same sex marriage "the law of the land" in all 50 states.  I share it here because I want seasonal folks as well as those who couldn't be in church to be aware of how St. Paul's is responding to the change in the law:

Good morning.  It's great to be with you this Fifth Sunday after Pentecost, what the church calls "ordinary season."  Sounds a bit boring to call it "ordinary season," especially when the season of life in which we find ourselves-with all of the joys and challenges here at St. Paul's-moving from the Surf Club to the Garden Club to the Furniture Mart and eventually, Lord willing, to Flamevine.  And the times we are facing in the country as a whole-the tumultuous cultural changes which are taking place at a breakneck pace-it feels like anything but ordinary times that we're living in, but this is the time when we're called especially to grow spiritually.

Before I begin, I want to say a word about the Supreme Court decision that was handed down on Friday which makes same sex marriage "the law of the land" in all 50 states.  The decision was disappointing for those of us who hold the traditional, biblical view of marriage.  The core leadership who started St. Paul's four years ago felt strongly enough about this issue that our statement of faith in the by-laws included the traditional biblical definition of marriage between one man and one woman.  I certainly hope my own position has been clear for years, since in 2008 I decided to leave the Episcopal Church, along with the other clergy at Trinity, based on what I felt was an abandonment of the clear biblical teaching on marriage and other issues.  The biblical position on marriage is best summed up when Jesus reaffirmed God's original plan for marriage in which He quotes Genesis 2:24 saying,

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh" (Matthew 19:5).

So with this in mind at St. Paul's, we will continue to uphold and bless marriages which follow the pattern which Jesus set forth.  We will not under any circumstance bless same sex marriages.  At the same time, and I want to be absolutely clear about this-we have always been an extremely gracious and compassionate community and we will continue to be so.  We understand that not everyone who comes through our doors to worship with us will agree with us on this issue.  And that's good.  We want people who have not heard about the love and forgiveness of Jesus, His death on the Cross and His resurrection, to hear about it and experience new life in Him.  I believe that the Spirit is moving at St. Paul's at least in part because we've been able to maintain a clear commitment to God's Word as the authority and moral compass of our lives while we continue to be loving and compassionate to all.

And finally, the law currently protects Pastors like myself who feel compelled by religious conscience to refuse to perform same sex marriages.  So as of right now, there is no threat to religious liberty, and we pray that will continue in the days ahead.  Please join me in praying for our country in the days ahead.

Gratefully in Christ,

Pr. Jon

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY UPDATE

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL

The children of St. Paul's will be hearing stories about the many miracles Jesus performed while on earth.  So don't be surprised if you hear the kids talking about water being turned into wine, storms being calmed, people walking on water, being raised from the dead, a great fish story or thousands being fed.  Jesus performed these miracles and many more to help us believe He is Christ, the Son of God.

SKIMMERS

The Skimmers are a group of about 12-14 children (ages 9-14) who meet each Wednesday evening for fellowship, Bible study, dinner, and of course FUN!  We are truly blessed to be able to use the Bethel Creek House to meet each week.  Being close to the beach has given us the opportunity to boogie board, skim board, swim, have cook-outs, and play volley ball.

The inside facility gives us a place to change, gather for dinner, play games and study God's Word.  This spring we have traveled with Paul, discussed respect and the importance of forgiving others.  My favorite part of the the evening is our prayer time.  It is so humbling to hear these young people pray for their family, friends and yes even that annoying person at school.

The Skimmers are on break for the summer while the children enjoy family time and vacations.  Many of them will be attending Survivor Camp during the last week of July and then we will begin meeting again on Wednesday, Aug. 12th at Bethel Creek.  The program is open to all children ages 9-14.

1450 21st Street
(the former Vero Furniture Mart building)
We have signed a lease to use the former Furniture Mart for St. Paul's Church!  This building is centrally located with plenty of parking, and we can advertise our new location in a variety of ways.  It's half of a block West of 14th Avenue
where "Downtown Fridays" takes place each week.   This property will serve as a great home for the next 18-24 months while work is completed on the Flamevine property.  We are very grateful for the Garden Club, however, it's a lot of work for our volunteers to set up and take down every Sunday.  The new property will allow us to set up and leave everything in place.  The children's ministry will have room for classes and worship, and there's enough space for the Azalea Lane offices to be moved there as well.  There are minor renovations being completed to the building so that it will satisfy all building codes.  We expect that our change of use application will be accepted by the city, and we should be able to start worshiping at our new location sometime in late August.  Please continue to pray!

FLAMEVINE LANE PROPERTY UPDATE
We have received parking agreements! The Building Committee is now preparing to apply for permits. Please continue to pray for all aspects of the planning-engineers, architects, and city planning.  Please pray also for the funding of the renovations that we would be wise stewards of the resources the Lord has given us.
HUMISTON PARK
St. Paul's made a donation of $5,000 to the Indian River Community Foundation to go towards the Humiston Park improvements that are now taking place.  The new playground will be completed in the fall.  This park space will be an integral asset to our Flamevine Lane property.

Faith Of Our Fathers Opens In Theaters This Wednesday!

You can honor the men and women who proudly defend our nation's freedom by experiencing FAITH OF OUR FATHERS, in theaters THIS Wednesday. And better yet, take a veteran or active duty military member with you! It's a beautiful story about faith, family, and freedom that powerfully illustrates the love of a father ... and the love of our Father.  And in today's culture, it is a reminder that there often is a cost when sharing Christ with others.
