COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY:
THE FUTURE OF BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH
"If I were a senior or first year graduate student interested in biology, I would migrate as fast as I could into the field of computational biology  . . . There are vast quantities of high-quality data accessible to anybody who has the skills to find the nuggests of truth that are hiding in that information," said Francis Collins, MD, Director of the National Institutes of Health in 2012.

FACULTY PROFILE
Guilherme Garcia, PhD

Guilherme Garcia, PhD began his career in biomedical research in Brazil. While studying for his PhD degree in Physics, he attended a seminar by a visionary otolaryngologist who described a condition called "empty nose syndrome". It became obvious that otolaryngologists would benefit from the application of fluid mechanics principles to investigate the interplay between nasal airflow and nasal pathologies.

POSTDOC PROFILE
Anthony Prisco, PhD

The future is now for researchers in regenerative medicine. One of those researchers, Anthony (Tony) Prisco, PhD, a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Greene Lab, works on understanding the mechanisms involved to regenerate tissue damaged through cardiovascular disease. His research focuses on endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) which are able to regenerate blood vessels in an animal model of cardiovascular disease. Learn More

IMPROVING HEALTH IN ASIA
Michael Kron, MD, MS

Michael Kron, MD, MS, a Professor of Medicine in the Biotechnology and Bioengineering Center, was selected as a Jefferson Fellow by the National Academy of Sciences last summer. He is a Senior Science Advisor in the United States Department of State in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Office of Economic Policy.  Kron has been advising Asian nations on a range of health issues from weeding out counterfeit drugs to the economic impact of mental illness.
