NEWS AND RESOURCES
On September 26, the Institute of Museum and Library Services announced grants for 42 library projects totaling $14,670,662. Six ULC members will be undertaking groundbreaking work in digital media, summer learning, STEM program development, early childhood literacy and adult literacy/workforce development. Read more.


Now is the time to start working on 2014 Summer Learning Programs. A great place to start is the National Summer Learning Association's upcoming conference, Summer Changes Everything. This conference features leading experts on the benefits of high-quality summer learning programs as well as practitioners who know what works. Conference sessions run the gamut from program design to impact measurement (including data collection!) and community-wide summer learning initiatives. Learn more and send staff.


Libraries Are Shelter from the Storm
In a column titled "Next Time, Libraries Could Be Our Shelter From the Storm", New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman recognizes the crucial work of libraries in times of crisis, concluding, "So here's an out-of-the-box suggestion: Let's build more branch libraries."

SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION
For the first time, the 2013 Top Innovators Awards recognized three ULC members for their heroic efforts to meet community needs in the wake of natural and human-made disasters. Draw lessons from the inspiring work of Johnson County Library, Poudre River Public Library District and Queens Library.  

The ULC Innovations Resource Center showcases a treasure trove of imaginative approaches to every aspect of library programs, services and operations. Every Innovation submitted since 2010 is housed here - there's something for everyone!
MEMBER ACHIEVEMENTS
Clyde Scoles, Director of Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, is the winner of the
Touchstone Lifetime Achiever Award from the Press Club of Toledo! Judges noted,"Fostering and improving literacy in our society is the key to a better informed and more competent workforce. Further, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library system is one of the crown jewels of our community. Toledo and the surrounding area are very fortunate to have this person at the helm."
