Each September on opening day, we greet the new students, families unpack, and in the afternoon we all gather at the amphitheater for the first assembly. After a brief welcome, the seniors and faculty introduce themselves, and we soon find ourselves moving towards the middle of the soccer field. First the seniors circle-up, and then the new students, faculty and parents join the expanding ring. On the count of three, we all find ourselves resting our weight on each other's knees. Laughter erupts; the tension breaks, and for a moment, the butterflies are captured as a new adventure begins.

There is no back row at Midland. Each year we circle up to begin another year. The Board of Trustees, faculty, students, parents, alumni and alumnae all lean on each other to welcome the challenge and appreciate the support it takes to pull our own weight and help each other along the way. We have all the natural and human resources it takes to thrive and succeed. Our garden and cattle feed us, our water and air sustain us, and we all live and learn together in this remarkable place.

I am grateful to be the Head of School at Midland. Together we chart a new course, and I look forward to the school year and all that lies ahead. I hope to see you soon.
