Alumna Rivers-Cannon receives prestigious award
Terriyln Rivers-Cannon, 1990 alumna, was recently presented with Georgia's Social Worker of the Year award for 2013 by the National Association of Social Workers.
The National Association of Social Workers awarded Rivers-Cannon because of her demonstrated care and dedication to the field of social work and commitment to the families that she service through her work with public and educational organizations.
Rivers-Cannon, a resident of Snellville, Ga., holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, a Master of Social Work degree from Florida State University and Doctorate of Educational Leadership degree from Argosy University in Sarasota, Fla.
She is currently the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) District 11 membership chair. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Officer Thomas
|
Thomas becomes an officer
in Manning, S.C.
The alumni highlight for October is Albert Bernard Thomas Jr., who is a new officer with the Manning Police Department.
Thomas graduated from Voorhees in 2008 with a degree in business administration. He went on to receive a MBA in management from Claflin University in 2010.
After graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, Thomas was sworn in as an officer during the Manning City Council meeting in July.
He is married to Akeia Witherspoon Thomas, and they have two children, Jenieghla Witherspoon and Kaleb Bernard Thomas.

Sellers addresses business and community leaders

Sellers hosts first "Town N Gown" Business Social
On October 3, President Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr. welcomed approximately 25 businesses and corporations on campus for Voorhees' first "Town N Gown" Business After Hour Social.
Some of the businesses and corporations present included Enterprise Bank, South Carolina Bank and Trust, Brooker True Value Hardware, United Hospice, Neeley Appliances and Power Sound and Music.
"The purpose of this event was to inform the business community on the great things taking place at Voorhees and ask for their continued support," said Marcus Burgess, vice president of institutional advancement.
"We're not looking for a handout from these companies; we only want a fighting chance."
During the program, President Sellers shared his vision for the institution and how these companies can better assist the institution.
Additionally, Student Government Association President Ben Bakayoko also shared how the business community can better assist Voorhees students.
"As the student government association president, it is my hope the business community will offer more shadowing experiences and internships for the student body," Bakayoko said. "Through this type of partnership, the students will be able to graduate from Voorhees with hands-on experience in their respective areas, which will better assist them with finding employment once they graduate."

Annual Graduate and Professional
Schools Day held
On October 16, the Voorhees College Career Office hosted its annual Graduate and Professional Schools Day.
There were a total of 16 institutions that participated in this event. Some of those institutions were Alabama A& M University, Florida Coastal School of Law, High Point University, Norfolk State University, Virginia State University and West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Gerald De Vaughn, director of the career office, said this year's event was such a success because of Voorhees graduates who are currently enrolled in some of these graduate schools and doing well.
"Norfolk State University was particularly interested in our computer science and mathematics majors," said De Vaughn. "The outstanding job that David Malone and Ryan Payne did as graduate students was very significant for our institution."
Students were excited about graduate and professional schools day and said these events are beneficial for them.
"I look forward to this event each year," said Ben Bakayoko, student government association president. "This event helps us begin to focus on our future after we leave Voorhees, and it forces us to begin preparing necessary items like our resumes and cover letters."
Currently, Voorhees also has two former students attending graduate school at North Carolina A&T University.
"Voorhees is doing a great job with getting more of our graduates into graduate school. Nathan Mack and Litany Lineberry are currently working on a master's degree in computer science at A&T. Tyquan Nimmons just received graduate assistance to begin his studies at A&T. Also, Voorhees has 13 graduates enrolled in graduate school at Alabama A&M University," De Vaughn said.

 Did you know...quick bits of news and knowledge about Voorhees College - Voorhees College was the first black school established by a woman. It was founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright-Menafee.
- Voorhees College currently has two students who are officers on the United Negro College Fund Pre-Alumni Council. Tyshera House serves as vice president and Katrina Sanders serves as the eastern regional director.
