Employee Spotlight

Celso Gomez Install/Maintenance

When it comes to knowing plants, Celso Gomez is on a first name basis with most every green thing in our nursery. With 30-plus years of experience behind him, Celso's expertise makes even the most complicated installation run like clockwork.

"Celso is a dedicated employee and has a great eye for making sure each plant gets just what it needs to thrive," say his manager Debbie Hopkins. "He's really an asset to our Good Earth Plants team."

"I enjoy the installation process but the best part is getting to work with great people," says Celso. "Working with Debbie is fun and I have learned a lot," he continues.

When Celso has time away from Good Earth Plants, he enjoys spending it with his family, including his wife, three sons, a daughter and three grandsons.

"I like to watch soccer and see my family, but I don't garden at home," he says. "I just mow the lawn. That's enough for me!" Celso says.

Thanks for your hard work, Celso.

Congratulations to Kerry Bauer

Letter from the President

Jim in Plants

Happy New Year!

"Less words, more pictures" is what I'm told. So to honor brevity, I'll be short and sweet.

2013 was a banner year, both Good Earth Plants and GreenScaped Buildings are growing and flourishing. Many new clients, many new plantscapes and many new living walls and green roofs were designed, installed and maintained by our professional and experienced team.

A special thanks to everyone - employees, clients, vendors, advocates and friends. I look forward to helping each of you achieve your dreams and goals, (within reason!) Please let me know how best I can help.

Will it be "more-green in two thousand fourteen"?

Warmest Regards,

Jim Mumford

GreenScaped Buildings Creates a Living Wall for ActivCare Chula Vista

The talented team at GreenScaped Buildings completed a living wall for the ActivCare Chula Vista Residential Care Facility and it's growing nicely. This is the second project for ActivCare after its first living wall went up at ActivCare Bressi Ranch in October of 2011.

"We are so pleased to have a repeat client to do a second project with ActivCare," says GreenScaped Buildings Project Manager Kerry Bauer.

"Our client wanted to duplicate the living wall we created at Bressi Ranch, so we used the same living wall system and plants they were familiar with for the Chula Vista location," says Kerry.

The living wall is six feet tall and ten feet long and is surrounded by a mural and bench to give it a park-like feeling. Some of the plants used include Santa Rosa ferns, red maranthas, lipstick plants and kangaroo ferns. The area receives great light from clerestory windows.

"The living walls designed and installed by GreenScaped Buildings have become a signature feature for our ActivCare residential memory care communities. We have installed two in San Diego communities and they have provided a great source of positive feedback from our families," said Todd Shetter, Chief Operating Officer for ActivCare Living, Inc.

"We worked closely with Jim Mumford to design and create a living wall that would create a wonderful environment of living plants generating oxygen and awe for our seniors living in our memory care communities," continued Shetter.

The ActivCare Residential Care Facilities provide a home-like setting for patients with Alzheimer's and other memory-related diseases. These communities create an environment filled with the comforts of home while supportive care can be on hand to assist when needed.

"We can change the entire wall area just by being creative with replacing the potted plants and flowers. The best part is that the residents get to see it fresh each day," says Jim Mumford, GreenScaped Buildings president.

"We look forward to working again with ActivCare at their next project at Mission Bay and for future projects" says Kerry.

Good Earth Plants Gets Down(town) to Green Up Old Police Headquarters

t was a busy fall for the Good Earth Plants team and for Operations Manager Debbie Hopkins, including an installation at an iconic San Diego landmark: The Old Police Headquarters downtown.

Originally built in the 1930s, San Diego's police HQ served as a one-stop-shop with holding cells, courtrooms and interrogation areas. The property with its recognizable bell tower and tiled roof was used as a backdrop for television shows in the 70s and 80s but has languished for the past 30 years with no permanent occupants.

The new owners and tenants of the property have kept much of the historic architecture and preserved many of the structures now home to upscale dining and shopping.

"We chose the plants and pots to blend in with the terra cotta Spanish-style architecture," says Debbie.

"We used a variety of drought-tolerant succulents, grasses and agave to enhance the area and create an old-California style and feel," she continued. "It was quite a project to set up the huge pots and get the plants settled in. Our installation team Nilo Cabrera, Danny Barttels and Celso Gomez worked hard on this project."

To keep water use at a minimum, there are rainwater barrels to collect runoff and preserve our limited California water supply.

"It was a pleasure to work with landscape architect Pat Caughey at Wimmer, Yamada and Caughey Landscape Architects. He made my job easy." continues Debbie.

The project is located at 789 West Harbor Drive. For more information, please visit their website.

A Word of Thanks

It's always nice to receive a kind word or a "thank you" from our clients. We wanted to take a moment to share what our client Vonda Weinman with Met Life (since 2003) had to say about Sophie Gonzalez, one of our talented plant technicians.

"I appreciate the way you take care of our plants...and me....you are a delight to work with and a real asset to your company!"

Thank you, Vonda for taking time to write to us about Sophie. And thank you, Sophie, for being a great representative for

Good Earth Plant Company.
