Coastal Research Volunteers
CRV Newsletter
April 2014

Hello Coastal Research Volunteers, Partners and Friends,

Happy Spring! As the temperature rises and the snow melts, the signs of spring are everywhere. Long distance migrants such as eels are returning to New Hampshire's coast (eel monitoring). Tom turkeys are strutting their stuff to woo hens (see Volunteer Voices below). Rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosom) receptacles are inflating in preparation for releasing their gametes (phenology). How do I know this, you may wonder? Because we have observations and data recorded by Coastal Research Volunteers! Data that are not only interesting, but extremely valuable for advancing science and informing natural resource management. Field season is upon us. So grab your boots and join us. We've got lots to do!

Adams Point Planting Project

Friday, April 18th, 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m.
Saturday, April 19th, 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m.

Located in Durham at the mouth of Great Bay, Adams Point is one of the bay's best bird watching locations and is ideal for viewing bald eagles. Join us in maintaining this popular wildlife viewing area by helping us add soil and plant native shrubs that will prevent shoreline erosion and also provide food and cover for wildlife. Just in time for Earth Day - help us make this area of Great Bay strong enough to last for generations!

This is a fun, beautiful and large area that needs some love. We are looking for 60+ volunteers per day, and you can commit to both days or just Friday or Saturday - whichever day works best for your schedule! Friday will include moving and adding soil to the area and prepping for the plants and Saturday will consist largely of planting the native shrubs and watering the new plants to ensure they thrive. Large groups are welcome, and while children are also welcome, no one under 12 years old please (if they are under 16 they will need to have a parent or guardian participate in the event also). This is a great way to give back to our local environment and be a part of something green for Earth Day!

Please contact Melissa at [email protected] or 603.778.0015 with any questions and to RSVP for the event.

Spring is here and love is in the air! CRV volunteer Mike Stockdale captured these fantastic photos of turkey courting in action.

Note: We are looking for volunteers to contribute prose or pictures to provide insight into your experiences in the field. It can be as little as an interesting fact or picture or as long as an article reflecting on a poignant experience. We want to hear from you!

Please contact Alyson with any contributions.
