 "Mrs. JESSICA Henderson, if you please" Sunday, May 3
WHS Lecture Hall, South Bldg. While the older among us remember when using one's first name and not one's husband's when addressed was still considered a little unconventional, many women a century and more ago did this and so much more to further women's rights. WHS teacher Kevin Delaney and students of the WHS History Project team reveal the subject of their newest local history project on May 3. Delaney had planned to do a general survey of what was going on in Wayland during the years of the Great War or World War I, but his attention was caught early on by the compelling story of Jessica Henderson. An uncompromising suffragist, pacifist and general pursuer of justice, Jessica Henderson's life story will be told on Sunday, May 3 at 3:00 in the WHS lecture hall. Join us for some storytelling about a one-of-a-kind firebrand whose life will make you wonder how she was ever overlooked. Refreshments will be provided after the program.

 TEDxYouth Saturday, May 9, 2 to 6 PM
WHS Auditorium Wayland has the great privilege of hosting a TEDx event on May 9th at the Wayland High School Auditorium. The official title is TEDxYouth@Wayland- Daring Greatly and the event will take place from 2-6pm. A TEDx event is an independently run TED event. The event will feature 12 High School and Middle School speakers and three musical performances. The intention of the event is to build community, spread inspiring ideas, and develop understanding and joy. Each talk will be 6-18 minutes and topics range from extraterrestrial life to micro-aggression, from beat boxing to transgender identity in our culture, from introverts in an extrovert's world to the power of volunteerism. The mission of any TEDx event is to curate an exceptional experience for the audience, and we promise it will be a treat for anyone present. We would welcome (and need!) donations small or large to support this event in order to cover the costs of pulling this off. We have a goal of raising $5,000 before May 9th.  Wayland Summer Strings August 3 - 7 at WHS
Grades 5 - 9
Wayland Summer Strings returns after a successful debut in 2014. Led by Whitney Tandon, Wayland Strings Director for Grades 3-8, the one-week program will culminate in a concert for family and friends. Dates are August 3 - 7, for the 12:30 to 3:30 pm sessions at Wayland High School. The program is for students who are entering Grades 5 - 9. Entering fifth graders should have at least two years of professional private lessons. "There are some fifth grade students who are advanced enough to benefit from this program, and I would be happy to discuss the recommended experience level needed," Ms. Tandon said.  2015-16 BASE Registration Now Open Deadline APRIL 27
Grades K - 8
Registration is now open for the K-8 BASE programs offered in all three elementary schools and at Wayland Middle School. Offered through Wayland School Community Programs, BASE has before-school programs from 7 am until 8:30 am at Claypit Hill, Happy Hollow, and Loker Schools. After-school programs are offered in all three elementary schools and at Wayland Middle School starting at the close of the school day. Programs are open until 6 pm, and a two-day minimum is required. Registration is online at www.familyid.com/wayland-school-community-programs. There is a $60 per family registration fee, and invoices will be mailed in early August. Tuition is due quarterly with the first payment due September 1. BASE programs offer children a mix of activity choices daily, such as indoor and outdoor active games, science, art, music, media, multicultural, and nature. Activities differ by site and are fine-tuned to student interests. Homework time is also part of the afternoon schedule.  DI Team Heads to Global Finals! May 20 - 23
The Wayland Wolves, a group of seven 5th graders from Claypit Hill School, placed second at the Destination Imagination (DI) state competition at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on March 28th, earning them a spot at the Global Final's for the second year in a row. The finals will be held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville from May 20-23. Now the team is busy raising money. The cost is $1100 per child for registration and travel for a total cost of close to $8000 to get the kids to the championship.
