"Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
Good morning,
As the days grow longer and temperatures grow warmer, please be sure your child makes appropriate clothing selections for the school day. The following excerpt from our Student Handbook outlines our updated dress code. We have made some slight revisions based on conversations with our House Leaders, students and School Council.
"Rule 10: You must wear appropriate clothing to school. Our expectations of appropriate clothing apply to all school events, including field trips and evening activities. Regardless of current styles, the following guidelines are expected:
a) Clothes that advertise drugs and alcohol or promote violence or other types of inappropriate behavior or language are not allowed and contradict the very goals and purpose of building a safe school for all of us.
b) Students are expected to wear and use a belt for any pants that do not stay up without the use of a belt.
c) Undergarments are to remain under your clothes and cannot be visible.
d) Low cut tanks, shirts or blouses that expose cleavage are not permitted. Additionally, shirts should not expose midriff skin.
e) Shorts and/or skirts must cover one's bottom and undergarments completely when standing, sitting or in motion.
f) Leggings and tights may be worn if an appropriately long enough top is worn as well.
Why:
While choosing your clothing is a personal decision and involves a combination of taste, trends, and common sense, we make a clear distinction between clothing items that are appropriate for outdoors or for a beach, and clothing that is appropriate for school.
What Happens:
Students may be asked to change into clothing that they may have in their locker or call home for more appropriate clothing. These conversations can be some of the most difficult that occur at school; they are awkward or embarrassing at best. Please help by not putting staff in a position where they must act."
Thank you in advance for your ongoing partnership.
Warm regards,
Betsy and George

Recess in Need of Equipment
If you happen to have any extra Frisbees, kickballs, footballs, or soccer balls lying around, please consider donating them to WMS for our recess activities. You can drop off items at the front office. The kids would appreciate having a couple more items to toss and kick around. Thank you!

June 1 - 12
All Grades
Wellness Fitness Testing will be held in all grades from June 1- 12. We utilize the FitnessGram protocol for which more information can be found
HERE.
If your child has a history of exercise-induced asthma and has an inhaler in the nurse's office, please remind him/her to see the nurse 20-30 minutes before pacer testing to pick up the inhaler and bring to Wellness class. If your child does not have an inhaler at school, then please provide the nurse with a WPS medication order form so that your child may use his or her inhaler while at school. The Wellness Staff would also like to ask all families to be sure their children eat breakfast and stay hydrated especially on fitness testing days. This testing is vigorous and failure to eat or drink adequate amounts of fluids can result in headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or fainting. Thank you!
~The Wellness and Health Room Staffs

Middle & More Parent Coffee
Friday, May 15th, 9:30-10:30 am
Please join us next Friday, May 15th, for a "Middle and More" coffee with Dossie Kahn of Wayland Youth and Family Services. Dossie will lead a discussion on "Nurturing Independence and Responsibility Through the Middle School Transitions." Do you ever ask yourself, "How do I know what my child can handle? How much should I let him or her fail?" Dossie will help us consider these questions as they pertain to middle schoolers and developmental milestones like homework independence, responsibilities in the home, going to the movies and the mall, independent use of public transit, overnights without families (Cape Cod and Washington, DC), making good choices when socializing with peers, asking for help in academic and work settings, and Internet use limits and safety. Contact Cathy Scholz at [email protected] if you have any questions. If you can't come this month, please mark your calendars for the last "Middle & More" of the school year with Betsy Gavron - Monday, June 1st, 9:00-10:00 am.
