> Giant Robot Gallery: Stories of Auspicious Animals
This is the last weekend to see "Stories" at Giant Robot
Thanks for the tremendous response for my new paintings Especially those who think these are playful and modest Two essential elements I try to keep in mind when remixing folk art
The Lion
Lions were not introduced in China until much later in history, but its image was immediately adapted by artists for its elegance and ferociousness
The image of 2 great lions playing with a ball of yarn in a circular composition was among some of the most loved
Here's my interpretation of the 2 mighty guardians protecting their young
Taking inspiration from traditions to create something new
Tortuga (tortoise) / 6" x 8" / acrylic on wood / sold
The tortoise has long been regarded as a symbol for longevity in Chinese culture
Its shell has also served as currency and method in foretelling the future
In parts of China, parents would make pillows in the shape of crab for their children to fend off nightmares
Perhaps the pinchers had something to do with it
The Duck
The Mandarin Duck is a symbol for love and courtship
Comforters for newlyweds are often embroidered with images of Mandarin ducks playing in the water
Proverbs inspired by these love birds can often be found in a serenade
The Peacock
As a symbol for dignity and beauty, the peacock is believed to be a manifestation of the Phoenix on earth
It's also associated with the Goddess Guan Yim, who helps with the suffering and transmutes evil into beauty
At full bloom, the peacock resembles protection and holiness
