Letter from the President |
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Greetings from balmy Grand Rapids! I am here at the invitation of Dixie Anderson, WACA Vice Chair, to participate in the strategic planning offsite today for the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan, which she leads.
This is a vital exercise for all Councils to undertake from time to time -- and very helpful to the National Office and Board, as WACA develops its own strategic plan this year.
The National Office is rolling out two initiatives. First, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, is the Weekly World News Digest. Starting Wednesday, we will e-mail a collection the past week's top news articles, reports, and op-eds from various domestic and international sources. Some of you are familiar with WAC Pittsburgh's offering; we think the national network will benefit from the timely sharing of perspectives.
Also, Wednesday, January 8, we will kick off Cover to Cover - our new monthly author series - with cybersecurity expert Peter W. Singer (details below). February's Cover to Cover will feature Jordan's former foreign minister on his new book, The Second Arab Awakening.
Here's to a new year of opportunities!

NEW! Introducing
Cover to Cover
The World Affairs Councils of America's National Office is excited to kick off 2014 by announcing our newest program: Cover to Cover, a monthly conference call featuring the most influential authors on subjects of national and international importance. Over the next six months in particular, our aim is to convene authors on the Six Top Issues for 2014 that we addressed in our National Conference in November.
This month, Cover to Cover presents Peter W. Singer, Senior Fellow and Director, Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence, Brookings Institution, and author of Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know on Wednesday, January 8 at 2:00 PM ET. The call with be moderated by Bill Clifford.
To register, please respond to this email or write Ian J. Byrne at [email protected] to receive call-in information.
Cybersecurity and Cyberwar (Oxford University Press) will be released on January 3. The book is structured around answering the key questions we all face in the cyber age (how it all works, why it all matters, and what can we do?). Peter W. Singer is the director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence and a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution. His research focuses on three core issues: current U.S. defense needs and future priorities; the future of war; and the future of the U.S. defense system. Full Bio
