President It is the 2nd quarter of 2013 and much is happening at the WTS NC Triangle Chapter. During the first quarter, we had our annual planning retreat at Emerald Isle, a Transportation You event, an Advisory Board Breakfast, a luncheon with the Mayor of Raleigh to announce our scholarship winners,and other exciting events. In April we had another Transportation You event.  In May we are having a luncheon with NCDOT Secretary Tony Tata, and in  June is the Awards Gala. Be on the lookout for more exciting events!

Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. (VHB), a Boston-based transportation, land use, and environmental firm, announces its acquisition of Martin/Alexiou/Bryson, P.C. (M/A/B), a leading Raleigh, North Carolina transportation planning, design, and traffic engineering firm. On April 15, 2013, M/A/B joined VHB's Raleigh operation, VHB Engineering, NC, P.C. and is now doing business as VHB.Together, VHB and M/A/B will be a full service transportation team, strategically poised to compete for the most important public, private, and institutional projects.

Program Highlights for 2013

Weekend Planning Retreat

Annual planning retreat was held at Emerald Isle in January 2013. Ten members participated in detailed discussions on WTS goals, awards, scholarships, mentor programs, budget, website and planning the events for 2013. 

 

WTS Scholarship Luncheon 

Nancy McFarlane, Mayor City of Raleigh 
Nancy McFarlane, the Mayor for the City of Raleigh Mayor graced the occasion to discuss the exciting things happening in the Raleigh area. NC Triangle chapter celebrated the importance of higher education by awarding four local scholarships to women pursuing careers in Transportation for graduate, undergraduate, community college and high school. 

 

WTS Breakfast Series

Ms. Gail Roper, Chief Information & Community Relations Officer for City of Raleigh

Ms. Roper talked about the Next Generation Network, a regional initiative to support educational and economic development by accelerating the deployment of ultra high-speed internet access.

Transportation You

TY
Transportation YOU is a WTS International endeavor with the USDOT, to introduce girls to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).  Our local chapter host meetings throughout the year, where students and mentors meet for activities and fellowship. Contact Angela Cobb for more information on this program.
 

WTS & NCDOT Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

As part of our chapter STEM initiative, NC Triangle partnered with NCDOT and CTE on February 14, 2013 to introduce high school girls to engineering and transportation. Students got an opportunity to participate in hands-on transportation related engineering activities and also in a question and answer session with some of the department's female engineers from various disciplines. NC Triangle participated in both the Raleigh and Greenville events with the Charlotte Metro Chapter assisting in Charlotte area.

 

WTS Transportation YOU Program 

Featuring Transportation Archeology with Susan Bamann, PhD Dr. Bamann talked about her role as an Archeologist in the transportation industry on February 28, 2013.  She explained that all projects require investigation and how they mark & dig an area to put together a report.  Dr. Bamann brought examples of some items that she had found during her career.

Anne Holzem - Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship

Ms. Holzem is completing an M.S.C.E. in transportation engineering at N.C. State.  Prior to graduate school, Ms. Holzem worked as a structural engineer for several years in the private sector.  Her graduate research focuses on accommodating bicyclists and pedestrians in superstreet designs. 

 

Myeongyeon Son - Leadership Legacy Scholarship

Ms. Son is completing her graduate degree in Environmental Management at Duke, focusing on energy and climate change policy as they relate to transportation policy.  Ms. Son, who is from Korea, is currently actively involved with the Duke Green Initiative, working with Duke's Office of Sustainability to find ways to improve campus energy efficiency and the university's transportation system. 

 

Malinda Bradley - Molitoris Leadership Undergraduate Scholarship

Ms. Bradley is finishing her sophomore year at N.C. State, where she is working toward a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, focusing on transportation. Ms. Bradley also works as an intern with a private transportation firm, where she has had the opportunity to work on a variety of traffic-related projects.

 

Naomi Reeves Jordan - Transportation YOU High School Scholarship

Ms. Jordan, a senior at Franklinton High School in Franklin County is interested in pursuing further study in civil engineering and drafting after graduation. She hopes that her future career in engineering will allow her to combine her artistic and technical interests and provide opportunities to develop creative ways to solve problems.

Veterans Membership Drive
WTS International is proud of our veterans, and is driven to support their efforts to find a career path in transportation industry. In fact, we want to begin by offering veterans a free one-year membership* to WTS International, because we believe that a successful career begins with the right resources.
