What's Driving You?

 

This past Saturday, I competed in my 5th "Mud" race, the Warrior Dash. For those who are unaware, a mud race is typically a 5k (3 mile) race filled with obstacles, rough terrain, and of course, mud. Even though these races are tough, they are a TON OF FUN!! It's not often that you get to crawl under barb wire, leap over walls, or run through tires, which is what makes these races something to remember. Despite all of that, the real reason I do these races are because they are a HUGE motivator for me.

 

It's very easy to stay motivated when you know in the back of your mind that Race Day is right around the corner. It plays a big part in your decision making as well. Should I run that extra mile today? Should I eat healthier this weekend? Do I really need another beer? Okay, some decisions are harder then others, but you get my drift!

 

My motivation for you this month is to create your own motivation. There are tons and tons of different races or physical events that would appeal to everyone and anyone. Races that involve canoeing, biking, or running. Themed events like the 'zombie' run or the firefighter challenge are fun for you and your family to do together. There is something for everyone, whether you are super competitive or just looking for a good time these events are tremendous motivators. I recommend everyone to try at least one in the next few months!

Our 2nd Fitness Challenge is in 
Full Swing!

Last week was the beginning of our 2nd JumpStart 2014 Fitness Challenge and we are excited with how well everyone 
is doing so far! 
 
The group is working out 4 days a week at the studio, meeting with our dietitian, and getting great advice from our life coach. We can't wait to share their 
progress with you!

Recipe of the Month
A Valentine's Day Treat!
 

Angel Food Cake with Fresh Berries and Whipped Cream

 
Angel Food Cake: 
Ingredients: 
12 egg whites (1 1/2 cup), room temperature
1 1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 cup all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
1 tsp lemon zest
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup granulated sugar

1. Separate egg whites from yolks, and place room temperature egg whites in mixer.
2. Add cream of tartar, extracts, lemon zest, and salt to egg whites and beat on high speed.
3. Gradually add granulated sugar until dissolved and stiff peaks form. 
4. Sift powdered sugar and flour together. Fold flour mixture into egg mixture 1/4 cup at a time.
5. Gently spoon into ungreased 10in bundt pan. Cut through batter with knife to remove air pockets.
6. Bake 350 degrees F for 40-45 minutes or until cake springs back when gently touched. Invert pan immediately on cooling rack, and cool completely before removing from pan. Loosen edges of cake from pan by running a knife around sides of pan. 

Fresh Berry Sauce:
Strawberries, 3/4 cup
Blueberries, 3/4 cup
Sugar, granulated, 1/4 cup
Pinch of cinnamon and dash of nutmeg
Lemon juice, 1 tsp

Combine ingredients into sauce pan on low heat. Smash berries a little to break down the fruit and release some of the juices.

Whipped Topping:
Heavy whipping cream, 1 cup
Vanilla extract, 1 tsp
Powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon
Pink food coloring 

Beat ingredients just until stiff peaks begin to form. Don't over beat, it is desirable to have them somewhat creamy.

Lauren Hamner definitely stands out at workout 32789, not just through her incredible work ethic but because of the atmosphere she provides as well. Her positive attitude and infectious spirit light up our studio every time she steps through the door. 

 

Personal training, small group classes, and boot camps, Lauren does it all and brings 110% to each and every workout. Next time you're working out, keep an eye out for Lauren, she will be the one working her tail off or dancing in-between stations, and bringing a smile to everyone's face!
