Exciting Health Insurance Options for AGC Members

Most of you know that the Affordable Care Act has changed the landscape for employers and employees regarding health insurance. AGC members Willis of MN and Bearance Management Group are now offering great programs AGC members will want to check out for health insurance coverage for non-bargaining unit employees. Each program is uniquely different and will give members options regarding benefit selection and management.

We suggest you contact one or both of these firms to see how they can assist you in your decision process.

Both Willis and Bearence are long-standing AGC members and can be trusted to deliver quality service.

Public Comment Period Begins for MnDOT Proposed DBE Goals

MnDOT invites public comment on proposed statewide goals for participation by Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) in FHWA-funded and FTA-funded construction projects for federal fiscal years 2016 - 2018. MnDOT is required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to analyze the availability and utilization of DBEs and to set a statewide goal for their participation in federally-funded projects over the next three years.

The proposed FHWA DBE goal is 11.7 percent of the total value of all FHWA funds expensed by MnDOT on highway projects. The proposed FTA DBE goal is 6.57 percent of the total value of all FTA funds expensed by MnDOT on transit projects.

Four public meetings are scheduled to discuss the goal methodology and receive public comment:

  • July 9, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., 2900 - 48th Street NW, Rochester
  • July 10, 1:30 - 3:00 p.m., Summit Academy (The Collaborative Group), 935 Old Olson Highway, Minneapolis
  • July 13, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m., Arden Hills Training Center,1900 W. County Road I, Shoreview
  • July 16, 10:30 - 12:00 p.m., 1123 Mesaba Avenue, Duluth

Public comments will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. on July 21. Written comments can be submitted to [email protected] or mailed to:

Kim Collins, Director
MnDOT Office of Civil Rights
395 John Ireland Blvd., M.S. 170

Stormwater Sampling Requirements Begin July 1
With general industrial stormwater sampling requirements beginning July 1, facility-specific stormwater monitoring report (SWMR) forms are now available online at http://cf.pca.state.mn.us/water/stormwater/isw/search.cfm . All site contacts will receive an email from the MPCA with information about the forms. Questions can also be directed to [email protected] or the stormwater hotline: 651-757-2119 or 800-657-3804.

Stormwater Research Survey

The MPCA has requested professional input in updating priority stormwater research topics and related efforts at MPCA. This very short survey is the first phase of a two-phase process. They are asking for feedback on one demographic and three research questions. Please mention specific variables, context, or examples rather than general topics, if possible. The ideas submitted in this phase will be synthesized and redistributed in two weeks for further refinement and ranking. Please complete the survey by Thursday, July 2. The survey is available here. If you have questions, contact David Fairbairn.

Workforce Shortage Survey
AGC of America is asking contractor members to take a few minutes to complete a brief survey on the impact of tight labor markets and the growing need for new, qualified workers. The survey is available here.

Federal Transportation Funding Updates

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee has approved the AGC-supported DRIVE Act, a six-year bill with increased transportation funding recommendations and several new program initiatives. The Committee has jurisdiction over the highway portion of the legislation and now must await action by the Finance Committee on the revenue portion, the Banking Committee on the transit segments, and the Commerce Committee on safety.

This week, two congressional committees (House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures and Senate Finance Committee) held hearings to explore ways to fill the Highway Trust Fund revenue gap. Congress must identify sources of revenue to fill the gap and pass a long-term transportation bill before the end of July, when the current extension expires, in order to keep highway and bridge projects running. While the House subcommittee examined options for using revenue from repatriated foreign earnings from US-based corporations, the Senate committee heard testimony about ways states can partner with the private sector to provide innovative financing options.

Dunwoody's Women in Technical Careers Program Needs You

As a part of Dunwoody's initiative to recruit, retain, graduate, and place more women in high-paying technical careers, they are launching the first Women in Technical Careers (WITC) cohort in August 2015. Recently, Dunwoody awarded WITC scholarships to 20 students in a variety of academic programs, all leading to non-traditional careers for women. Scholarship recipients will be matched with mentors, who will guide them during their educational experience at Dunwoody. Mentorship will be important to this group of students as they struggle to balance school, home, and work while building their professional network.

Dunwoody is currently seeking women who are interested in mentoring the students. This is an opportunity to give back and support women who are new to non-traditional fields. Mentors are needed in the areas of: Construction Sciences/Building Technology (Construction Project Management, Estimating, Drafting, Architecture, HVAC Installation/Service, and Electrical), Manufacturing (Drafting and Design, Machine Tool, Industrial Controls, and Welding and Metal Fabrication), Automotive (Automotive Technician and Collision Repair), and Computer Technology (Web Programming and Database Development).

If you are interested in being a mentor, contact Maggie Whitman, Dunwoody enrollment coordinator, at 612.381.3362 or [email protected].
