Rare is the time when a hospital nurse fosters a long-term patient relationship that spans years, much less decades. That is very much the case with dialysis nurses, however, as patients can be on dialysis for that duration. Just ask Agnes Zielinski, a nurse at Ottawa's Civic Hospital. Drawn to the profession 30 years ago, she has spent 23 of them as a hemodialysis nurse. Her career choice was obvious - she embraced health care and the role nurses play in taking care of people.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada held its Ontario Volunteer Awards on Saturday, May 2, 2015, to recognize and thank hard working individuals, groups, and community partners for their dedication and support. Emcee Sue Tkachuk, chair of the Ontario Volunteer Development Network, presented awards to volunteers who have made a significant contribution to The Kidney Foundation's mission and vision based on criteria such as leadership, education and stewardship. In addition, two Kidney Foundation volunteers, Michael McCormick and Shirley Pulkkinen, were recently lauded for their varied contributions in the renal community with Human Touch Awards. The Kidney Foundation of Canada's  Blue Builder program allows members of our community to raise money and awareness "their way." With some help and guidance from the Foundation, these supporters host a wide variety of events designed to help reduce the burden on those living with kidney disease.

Everyone loves to hit the great outdoors during the warm weather and for most of us food plays a large part in our summer activities. But it is important to keep in mind that warm temperatures, while ideal for picnics and barbecues, also provide an inviting environment for bacteria and other pathogens in food to multiply rapidly and cause foodborne illness.
