SHOE DRIVE SERVICE PROJECT
Girl Scouts give back!

More than 3,700 pairs of shoes were donated to Haiti by Girl Scouts in the North region through Shoes4Love. This project began when Girl Scouts in Marion heard about orphans in Haiti who were without shoes. The girls collected 1,214 pairs of shoes, including 200 flip-flops they purchased with their troop funds! Leader Brenda Soyez is pictured with the Dando Amor Volunteers right before they loaded the shoes.

Several troops in Saline and McPherson counties also got involved, including Junior Troop 20909 led by Terri Mattison. Troop 20909 earned their Bronze Award by completing over 20 hours of service towards the shoe drive. Quincy, a member of the troop said, "Once I saw the picture of the boy with the infected leg, I felt like if we helped we might be able to save someone's life." The girls set up several boxes around Salina where the community members could drop of their donations. Two troop members, Olivia and Quincy, promoted the project on the radio.

"It was fun collecting all the shoes, but hard work, too. The bags were really heavy!" Troop member Skyla said about the project.

Submit your Community Service Report for a chance to win!

We want to hear about the great work Girl Scouts are doing in the community! Telling us about your service project not only lets us share the great news, it helps the council qualify for crucial grant funding that supports Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland is offering a quarterly incentive of $50 in shop credit to a Girl Scout troop that turns in one or more community service reports through our website each quarter. At the end of the quarter, we do a random selection to choose the winner. Click here for more details.

TROOP TIPS
Splish splash!

The school year is coming to a close, and Girl Scouts are ready! Swimming is a favorite Girl Scout activity and one of the many ways girls develop athleticism, leadership and team-building skills.

Whether swimming outdoors at camps or in indoor pools, safety is one of the keys to having fun in the water. Click here

for swimming safety guidelines.

Salina YMCA is hosting Splish Splash Safety on June 19 for Daisy, Brownie, and Juniors.
