June has been a busy month and I am sure we are all looking forward to the summer when the pace of things becomes a little slower.
Please remember that children will be out and about having fun so watch for them as you are on the roads.
There is a lot to do in the city this summer so please click here to check the calendar for Celebration Square and take part in one of our numerous free events. We are fortunate to have miles of park trails in our ward and two lovely lakes to enjoy as you walk or cycle. Take advantage of the free concerts at Lake Aquitaine hosted by Meadowvale Theatre on select Sundays.
Please remember to be cautious in wooded and grassy areas and check yourselves and your pets for ticks which are a concern this year and can cause Lyme Disease. To find out how to prevent ticks and what to do if you do find them, check out the Region of Peel website here. While there, learn also how to protect against West Nile Virus which is caused by mosquitoes.

Important Information about Fireworks on Canada Day

The Public Meeting for the application for construction of 1 detached home and 20 semi detached homes on lands at 6532 and 6544 Winston Churchill Blvd. (just south of Aquitaine) was held at the Planning and Development Committee meeting on June 8th.
The report was just for receipt and a final report with recommendation will come back to the committee in the fall. I want to thank the residents who attended and made very good comments and suggestions. It has been a good process and through two ward meetings that I held, the developer has listened to the residents and made changes based on their input.

Meadowvale Islamic Centre
I have held several community meetings on this application.
City Planning staff are presently reviewing the application and are still finalizing the last parking study.
The final report and recommendation is tentatively scheduled to be presented at the Planning and Development Meeting at City Hall on September 21, 2015 starting at 7:00 pm. I will confirm this date when I receive confirmation.
Residents are welcome to attend this meeting and speak to the application.

Important Information about Fireworks on Canada Day
As we approach the Canada Day holiday which occurs on a Wednesday this year, I would like to share the following information regarding how complaints related to the discharge of fireworks are responded to within the City of Mississauga: The discharge of fireworks located on private property is limited to Victoria Day and Canada Day (or the following day if the weather on the actual day makes the discharge of fireworks impractical.) Since this activity is limited to specific calendar days, the detonation of fireworks beyond midnight of the prescribed days would be prohibited. The discharge of fireworks in a City park is prohibited except when a valid permit has been issued. Enforcement in city owned facilities and/or properties is the responsibility of City Corporate Security Services. To report fireworks in a city park call 905-615-4060. To report the discharge of fireworks on roads or sidewalks call 905-453-3311 for Peel Regional Police. To apply for a permit for firework displays in parks, the basic requirements would be: - A permit under the Fireworks By-law 0293 - 2001 (issued by Fire) - Approval from Parks Please call the Recreation Customer Service Centre at 905-615-4100 to apply for a permit and to inquire about availability and feasibility of your desired location (please note that not all parks allow enough space for safety).

Seniors' $1 Transit Fare Pilot Project Approved
I am pleased that my colleagues supported the recommendation moved by Councillor Parrish and me to allow seniors to ride transit for $1 in off peak hours!
We have been working on this project for some months and I spoke to many residents during the election campaign last fall and got overwhelming support for the proposal. We will be doing this on a 6 month pilot and will review the usage at the end of that time. At the same time we are looking at how we can provide a similar program to low income riders through a program at the Region of Peel.
The $1.00 cash fare for seniors will be effective starting Monday June 29, 2015 and will be in effect weekdays from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm and after 7:00 pm and at all times weekends and holidays. Senior ID will be required as is currently required for Senior Tickets. There is no requirement to specifically use MiWay issued senior ID cards although this may be convenient for some seniors.
I hope this will enable more of our seniors to become active and provide them with more accessibility throughout the city.

Splash Pad at Lake Aquitaine Closed for the Summer 
I regret to advise that the Lake Aquitaine splash pad will remain closed for 2015 as staff have determined that there are safety concerns due to the construction of the Meadowvale Community Centre and Library. In addition work is required to relocate some of the water lines that run thought the splash pad area. We apologize for the inconvenience as I had hoped we could keep the splash pad operating this summer.
The closest splash pads to our community are located at Quenippenon Park on Erin Centre Blvd and on McDowell Drive west of Tenth Line.
Also note that due to construction related to storm water discharge to Lake Aquitaine, some portions of the park pathway adjacent to the Meadowvale CC construction area will remain closed over the next 2-3 weeks. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Infected Ash Trees Being Removed in Parks
City contracted crews are working in parks to remove Ash trees infested with Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). For most of the parks, signs will be posted and letters will be
sent to residents in the surrounding area.
All trees scheduled for removals have been marked with an
orange X.
Crews will be working Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. After the initial tree removal, crews will remove the tree stumps, repair the ground with topsoil and reseed. All works will be weather dependent.
All City-owned park trees removed due to EAB will be replanted over several years. This is due to the high number of trees removed from parks, the short planting season and weather conditions.
Forestry is currently working on plans to replant woodlots. Each woodlot is unique and will require additional work to create individual plans for each site. For some, that may mean letting them regenerate naturally while others will have trees replanted.

Meadowvale Trail Reconstruction
Another section of our park trails in Meadowvale is being reconstructed.
Work should be completed within 4 to 6 weeks pending weather and site conditions.
The contractor is starting north of Shelter Bay Road and south to Aquitaine Avenue then continuing south of Battlefield Road to Montevideo Road and Settler's Green Park and finishing south of Settler's Green Park to Montevideo Road and onto Windwood Drive to continue south connecting to the Lake Wabukayne Trail.

Cyclists must Sound Bell or Horn on Paths!
Cyclists using our paths and trails, please remember that the law requires you to sound your horn or ring the bike bell when approaching pedestrians or other cyclists.
Please be careful and courteous and let people know you are approaching. This simple action can prevent injury.

Road Resurfacing on Derry and Britannia
The Region of Peel will be resurfacing Derry Road West from Danton Promenade to Montevideo Road/Copenhagen Road with construction scheduled to start in mid-July with a completion date of mid-October, weather permitting. Crews will do the work during the day from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Paving will also take place on Britannia Road from Highway 407 to Winston Churchill Blvd starting in mid-July to be completed by mid-October. Crews will do the main work during the day from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm but will do some of the quieter paving work at night for a smoother job.

Union Gas Park at Design Stage
I know the community is excited about having a new park at Tenth Line and Aquitaine and following all the input from residents, we are moving ahead with design work.
The Consultant was hired in May and I expect that detailed designs and approval will be completed by August to go to tender in September.
I will advise when the plans will be available for the community to view and hope to have them on display at the Meadowvale Library before final approvals are given.
We plan to break ground this fall and initial work will include a temporary ice rink for this winter's use.
We should be able to incorporate all the ideas from our community meetings into the park design and I know the community is looking forward to seeing the final plans as much as I am.

Play In the Park back this Summer at Lake Aquitaine
Our free outdoor summer camp Play in the Park is back again at Lake Aquitaine Park.
This FREE half-day, drop-in, summer camp is available from June 29 to September 4, 2015.
Children ages 6-12 are invited to come discover the fun and wonder of active play through physical activities, crafts, drama and games under the supervision of our High Five-trained leaders. Parents, grandparents and caregivers are welcome to stay and play, too.

 StormWater Charge Information
Starting January, 2016, you will see a City of Mississauga stormwater charge on your Region of Peel water bill. Until this time, the charge for stormwater continues to be paid through your tax bill. By moving to a separate billing system we can ensure that the funds collected are dedicated only to stormwater needs. It also creates a more fair billing system as some properties create more run-off and will be charged more.
This funding will be used only for maintenance and upgrades to the City's $1.8 billion stormwater system to ensure it is kept in good repair and avoid future flood damage and expensive repairs.
Our stormwater system was built over the last 50 years to meet the needs of the city based on climate conditions at the time of construction. The drainage system protects water quality and lowers the risk of flooding that can damage your property and the environment.
Stormwater is the rain and melted snow flowing from our properties on to our streets and down into more than 40,000 storm drains; this water flows through a large and complex network of pipes and waterways directly into Lake Ontario. As the city has grown the amount of hard surface areas (roofs and driveways) has led to increased water entering the system.
The greatest factor, however, that is impacting the current infrastructure is the change in climate that has resulted in more frequent and heavy rainfalls. While our community was not impacted by flooding in summer of 2014, a large number of properties across the city were and experienced severe damage to homes.
There is more stormwater now than ever before and it's more expensive to maintain this system. We need to invest more money in our stormwater system to keep it in good working order and to avoid costly repairs in the future.
Stormwater charges are used by nearly 1500 municipalities in North America, including 19 in Canada and we used the experiences of others to determine how we would proceed.
In 2016, residential property owners will pay between $50 and $170 depending on the size of their rooftop, with the average detached home paying $100 per year.
Non-residential and multi-residential properties will pay $100 for every 267 square metres (2,874 square feet) of hard surface on that property.
The switch to the stormwater charge will result in approximately $6.7 million being removed from the tax base in the 2016 budget. This is approximately a $25 reduction per household. The new charge will provide an annual funding of $37 million.
Commercial, industrial and multi-residential properties can reduce their charge by making significant improvements to divert stormwater from the system. I tried to include a similar rebate system for residential homes but staff advised that the administration cost would be more than the rebates. I did ask that we find some way to reward residents who make changes such as disconnecting their downspouts from the system and I hope we will be able to introduce a program by the end of the year.

Nuisance Sign Removal Program
I am proud to have spearheaded the Nuisance Sign Removal Program which is a way residents can participate and help the City of Mississauga keep boulevards free of illegal signs.
The City takes pride in maintaining and ensuring our boulevards are clean and free of illegal signs.
With residents' help to remove the illegal streets signs in our neighbourhoods, we can ensure our City boulevards look neat and tidy.
To participate in the program, residents must:
- be 18 years of age or older
- carefully read the Nuisance Sign Removal Agreement, which can be found by clicking here
- print and sign two copies of the agreement; and
- bring or mail both copies to the City's Sign Unit, located at City Hall, 300 City Centre Drive, Planning and Building Customer Service Centre, 3rd Floor.

Freedom Pass still available for Youth 12-14
Starting
July 1 to August 31
, Mississauga kids
ages
12 to 14 can use the Freedom Pass to take unlimited rides on all MiWay bus routes (excluding route 88 to Wonderland).
The program encourages young people to try transit and visit places around Mississauga like libraries, community centres and parks. The pass also allows them to swim free during any public swim time at City-owned indoor and outdoor pools.
Passes are available now with limited quantities. To apply, drop by any City community centre to complete an application form with parental/guardian approval. Valid photo ID with proof of age is also needed. Customer service staff will take a photo and provide the wallet-sized pass to the child.

PanAm Games are Coming to Mississauga!
The world is coming to Mississauga to take part in and observe the 2015 PanAm (July 10-26) and Para PanAm Games (August 7-15).
More than 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials from 41 countries are participating in the Games, the largest international multi-sport events ever hosted in Canada and the largest of its kind in the world behind the summer Olympics.
We are proud to be a host city and the fourth largest cluster for the games, the only host city outside the City of Toronto to host events every day of the Games.
Mississauga Sports Centre (Hershey Centre) is the venue for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am sports of judo, karate, taekwondo, and wrestling, and the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am sports of goal ball, powerlifting, and wheelchair rugby. Expect to see the highest level of competition!
The excitement and energy of the Games will go beyond the individual events as Mississauga celebrates its passion for sport throughout the course of the Games, featuring a variety of events, festivals and concerts across the city. The Opening Ceremonies viewing party will be held at Mississauga Celebration Square on Friday July 10.
In addition to a world-class sports venue, we will welcome an estimated 50,000 visitors to Mississauga to discover all that Mississauga has to offer and to support our tourism based economy.
I am proud to serve as one of the Council representatives on the PanAm Host Committee and I encourage you to celebrate the games this summer.

Samsung Relocates to Meadowvale
I was pleased to tour Samsung's new offices and showroom on May 7 to celebrate the grand opening of their new location in the Meadowvale Business park. Samsung has had headquarters in Mississauga for over 25 years and I am proud to have them now in Ward 9.
The new showroom highlights all of the company's current and future innovations. I enjoyed being hands-on with the technology.

Royal LePage Fundraiser for the Shelter Foundation
I was pleased to attend the Royal LePage fundraiser in support of the Shelter Foundation on May 9. Each dollar raised will go to local shelters to support women and children fleeing from abuse. It was a fun filled day at their location on Plantation Boulevard in Central Erin Mills.

Meadowvale Youth from The Dam win Marty Award
I attended the Mississauga Arts Council Marty Awards on May 7th at the Living Arts Centre and I was so pleased that the Dam Poets Society won the MARTY for Creative Community category.
It was so exciting to see the young people from the drop in receive their award. It was a well earned recognition and I am so proud of them.

Lieutenant Governor of Ontario visits City Hall
On May 19th, I, along with the Mayor and Members of Council, was pleased to welcome the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the
Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell on her first official Mississauga visit.
While chatting with her, I was pleased to learn that we were both born in
Belfast, Northern Ireland - it's a small world indeed.

Breaking Ground for another Meadowvale Office Building
On May 21, I attended the ground breaking ceremony for Gateway Meadowvale, an office building that is planned to meet LEEDs Gold certification.
Located in the Meadowvale Business Park, this building is the beginning of a two-phase development that will help to complete the already successful Ward 9 business community.

RATIONAL Canada Renovates Office
I was pleased to drop in and celebrate the renovation of Rational Canada's office in Meadowvale. Ratonal Canada has been in Ward 9 since 2002 and by renovating their current location, they have shown their commitment to their employees and the business community.
Rational Canada is a specialist in hot food preparation in the world's professional kitchens and I was delighted to sample some of the foods prepared in their professional ovens which they manufacture.

The Dam Dinner and Dessert Auction 
The Dam's young moms group, Affinity, held their annual Dinner and Dessert auction on May 30 in support of their Young Mom's program. As always the event was a huge success raising over $8,000 for the program.
It was fun to see the bidding soar on the donated desserts with the top bidding going to buy brownies at $1,200. Click here to learn about the Young Mom's program.

New Training Program through Connect4Life Launched
It was such a pleasure to join my colleague Jim Tovey in Port Credit on June 1 for the launch of a new training centre through Connect4Life. This program will teach broadcasting skills to people with disabilities. It is a great opportunity for people to find their full potential and assist them in finding future employment.

Eden Community Food Bank
Has a New Name
On May 27th I attended the Eden Food Bank Annual General Meeting where they unveiled their new name - Eden Food for Change .
The new name better reflects the great strides Eden has made in going beyond distribution of food. Eden Food for Change is committed to increasing access to good food in a dignified manner, developing food skills to encourage healthy eating and empowering the community through education, outreach and advocacy.

Hundreds of seniors came out to learn about services from over 35 displays at my 3rd annual Seniors' Information Fair on June 2.
Many thanks to all the organizations that joined us this year.
I received great feedback from the residents who attended to get information from all of the agencies and organizations.
Thanks also to Tim Horton's Meadowvale Town Centre for providing the tea and coffee.

Carstar Rebranding
Twelve years ago I cut the ribbon to open Carstar on Argentia Road. On June 11th, I had the pleasure of attending the celebration of their new look.
I also got to view and have a photo taken of the NASCAR #24 car driven by Jeff Gordon. I always like to hear that our local businesses are thriving and improving.

St Francis of Assisi Anglican Church Peace Service & Butterfly Release
It was an honour to join the members of St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Church and the community for a Peace Service and Butterfly release on Saturday June 6th.
The half hour service included the re-dedication of the Peace Garden and a butterfly release to build peace in our community. Donations were made to sponsor a butterfly and to help "plant" peace.
Following the Peace Service I hosted a free Community BBQ with help from the 1st Meadowvale Scouts.

Trike-a-thon at Streetsville Childrens' Centre
I was pleased to once again be the "grand marshall" for a Trike-a-thon on Saturday June 6th. I always love going to the Streetsville Childrens' Centre on Millcreek Drive in Meadowvale for their annual fun day. Watching the little ones race on their trikes and bikes is a great way to celebrate.

I had the pleasure of participating in a staff training session on June 9 at the Chop Steakhouse which has opened at the corner of Argentia Road and Erin Mills Parkway in the former conference centre adjacent to the Hilton Meadowvale. It is always good to welcome new businesses to the community providing more local jobs.

Council Honours City Employee
My colleagues and I were proud to honour Mississauga resident and City employee Oliver Carrubba and to present him with the Canadian Armed Forces Rotation Bar for his tours of duty and the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation at the June 10 Council Meeting. Thank you Oliver for your contribution to our country.

Farmers Market Open This Summer
I had the pleasure of being at the opening of our new Ward 9 Farmers Market at the Lisgar GO station on Sunday June 14. There were lots of great vendors and some familiar faces. I toasted the opening with maple syrup and then visited with my friend Dale at his daughters' hot sauce booth. The market is operated by Many Feathers, a group of local residents in conjunction with Eden Food for Change and is open every other Sunday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. The next one is June 28.

I attended the Pan Am Games kick off event at the Hershey Centre on Saturday June 13 representing Mississauga Tourism and the Pan Am Mississauga Host Committee. This was a one-day special event focusing on combative sports. Watching all of the martial arts groups made me realize how similar dance and sports are. I got to see some truly amazing athletes.

It was a wet day but many people came out on Sunday June 14 to Celebration Square to see the Pan Am torch lit and sent on its way on the first leg of the Mississauga relay. The torch relay started at the Square and wound it's way to Memorial Park in Port Credit where we also lit the cauldron for the games.

Lake Aquitaine Summer Series
Enjoy live performances in Lake Aquitaine Park on select Sundays, 2:00 to 4:00 pm. This is a FREE event put on by
the Meadowvale Theatre so bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a performance at Lake Aquitaine Park, 2750 Aquitaine Ave (east side of park, by soccer field, off Montevideo Ave).

The Eden Food for Change Youth Council is excited to be hosting its 3rd Annual Movie Night showing Guardians of the Galaxy.

Book club to Host Ann-Marie MacDonald
The book club which meets at Eden United Church is hosting well known author Ann-Marie MacDonald

has written a number of novels including, "As the Crow Flies," and "Fall on your Knees". She has just published her third book, "Adult Onset" and is also the narrator and host of the TV show Doc Zone. The cost is $10.00. All proceeds go to support a poor village in Kenya and the church.

Myeloma Canada 5K Walk at Lake Aquitaine
The MYELOMA CANADA Halton-Peel 5 km walk is taking place this year on September 20, 2015 at Lake Aquitaine Park. All money goes to MYELOMA CANADA for research into more effective drugs, as well as Better Treatment for Patients.
