3D SCANNING & VIDEO GAMES
|
The Games We Play: How Do They Look So Good?
Games are rocking the market. According to the
Entertainment Software Association, 155 million Americans play video games with the average game player being 35 years old. In 2014, the gaming industry made $22.41 billion in sales. That's mind-blowing.
Many gaming companies have adapted 3D scanning, photogrammetry, LIDAR and motion capture in their production. They produce realistic and dramatic game trailers to pull in the consumers.
With the use of
CG characters
, and other visual effects, they've been able to tell a story that draws the audience in. Whether the characters are being used as the main focus in a cinematic game trailer or as background in the game, using a 3D scan as a starting point saves a lot of time and money, and gives you a more accurate and realistic result.

TNG did some of the 3D scanning for Elder Scrolls, which ranked #4 in computer games. |
The demand for this type of work is growing. We are highly mobile and can bring our 3D scanning services to any location. Let us know how
we can help you
with your next game project.

3D SCANNING & COMMERCIALS

Using Visual Effects
in Commercials
It is common today to watch a commercial packed with incredible visual effects. It began in the late 90s when we really started seeing a shift in the way visual effects were being used. Now we can watch babies roller skating down the street, cars driving through unbelievable environments, and animals transforming into robots. But what does it take to create such an amazing 30-60 second advertising spot?
Typically an advertising company will work with a production house to create the spot. The production house reviews the storyboard and may hire an outside vendor who specializes in creating digital assets if the spot calls for visual effects. Digital assets can include 3D characters, 3D vehicles, 3D buildings, and 3D environments. These assets can be manipulated to fit any scene.
For example, o
ne trick practiced by the entertainment industry is to use the asset to create a crowd of people walking the streets, filling a stadium, or running a marathon.
3D scanning or LIDAR scanning can be used to create a digital asset. The data picked up by the scanner creates an exact digital copy of the model.
This Red Bull commercial "
Transforming Formula 1" is a great example of how visual effects can be used in commercials today. It's not always the goal for 3D to be used to produce photo-real quality - instead 3D cameras can be used, and 3D principles to transform objects, explode things into particles, or to view things microscopically.

3D SCANNING & MUSIC VIDEOS
|
VFX Takes Music Videos to a Whole New Level
Music industry artists have been incorporating special effects and visual effects in their music videos since Herbie Hancock's iconic 1984 music video,
Rockit, which was one of the first winners in the Best Special Effects category for music videos.
In 2013, indie pop group, Capital Cities took home the MTV Video Music Award for Best Visual Effects for the work done on their
Safe and Sound
video. In 2011, David Guetta's music video
Turn Me On
featuring Nicki Minaj was a nominee in the Best Visual Effects category, which was really exciting for us since we did some of the 3D scanning for it.
When considering using visual effects in your music video project, there are a variety of tools and services you can you use to speed up the process. Here are some tips if you decide to go the
3D scanning
route.
Tip #1: Know what you want from the start. This may seem simple, but can often be difficult as the project unfolds.
Tip #2: Be specific and detailed when explaining what or who is being scanned. To make sure the 3d scanning crew captures what you need, give full details ahead of time about what they will be scanning and what you expect the final product to look like.
Tip #3: Let the 3d scanning crew know how much time they have to scan and deliver the product. There are certain clothing items that take more time to scan and replicate such as lacy items, transparent material, and anything black and shiny.
It's a thrilling time to be in the entertainment industry and with visual effects technology continually evolving, the possibility of producing even greater vfx work is endless.
