Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology
Inventing Tradition
Jane Lancaster, Brown University
Date:  Tuesday, April 15, 2014
Time:  5:30 p.m.
Location:  Brown University Salomon Center, Room 001   /  69 Brown Street, Providence

When Brown students conduct a campus tour they pass on Brown traditions, some of which have a long and honorable history, while others are of more recent (and dubious) origin.  Jane Lancaster, who is completing the first full-length history of Brown since 1914, will talk about the origins of some Brown traditions, including a few that have disappeared, and the purposes they serve in creating community among the thirteen thousand people who currently work at or study at Brown, and the many more thousands of alumni who have passed through (the symbolic and traditional-but since when?) Van Wickle Gates.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology.

Free and Open to the Public.
