FOLLOWING THE CALL OF LOVE

"We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to Love's purpose for them."

                                                                         ~Romans 8:28

We never know what a day will bring.  Some days take on a life of their own, with unexpected twists and turns: events, conversations, promptings, invitations and epiphanies.  Most days contain elements of both wonderful serendipity and untimely intrusion.  For me, if the day gets messy, I sometimes find myself saying, "Ok God, what are you going to do with this?  How is this going to work out?"  When I pray such questions, they often come with a mix of fear, curiosity and amusement.  Looking back, over all the days that lead to today:  indeed, God has worked it all together for good.

The message this Sunday is from Matthew 4: 18-23, the beloved "call" scripture where Jesus says to Peter and Andrew, "Come follow me."   When they woke up that day it probably did not occur to them that by day's end they would have quit their job and taken on another.  And they did so "immediately" as described in verse 20. When Jesus disrupted their day (and their lives!) with his compelling invitation, they didn't say "we'll get back to you."  They did not delay their response until after meeting with their spiritual directors, advisors, or even family.   When they immediately abandoned their nets and followed Jesus, it probably came as a shock to those around them.  They probably even shocked themselves.  And most likely, just a few steps down the road with Jesus, they said something like, "How is this going to work out?"

Given the perspective of time, we can see how God worked all that happened in their lives for good. We also know that on the way to grace and goodness they experienced suffering, disappointments, and loss.  Yet even today their choices and their lives are making a difference.  God is still working it all out for good.

This Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 AM,  we'll look further at how our extraordinary God invites ordinary people (like you and me!) to follow the call of love---wherever it may lead.

BIBLE STUDY
APPLYING OUR FAITH

What is in your Christian tool kit? Hebrews 11:1 states: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."   The upcoming 2014 Bible study will be exploring how to apply our faith to our daily personal journey with Christ. The focus of this study will revolve around four themes: Spiritual Tools, Personal Growth, Developing your Walk with God and Tools for Spiritual Defense. Each theme during the series is intended to provide spiritual tools to guide your personal journey with Christ by promoting a better understanding of how to apply the 66 wonderful books we call the Bible to our daily lives.

We are called to build our spiritual formation from the solid foundation of the Word.

                                             (See Rom. 10:17)

I ask the simple question once again: "What is in your Spiritual tool kit?
