CSI SPOTLIGHT
It Takes a Village
Cherise Schacter, CSI, CDT, President-Elect, Education Committee Chair
Often, we all get so caught up in our hectic, day-to-day lives that we forget to share our gratitude for those who really go above and beyond to help make this such a dynamic and growing organization.

I would like to take just a short moment to highlight a few of our amazing volunteers who bring you such rich and varied programs, events and education.

Erica Bitterman-Ryon - Precision Images

Golf Tournament, NW Region Conference and everything in between

Erica is a true CSI Kraken who steps up, over and over and over again, to support and enrich this Chapter in more ways than I think anyone can count.  She is the driving force behind our NWRC, puts together an amazing golf tournament each year and say's "yes" every time you ask for help.

Corey Morris, Clark/Kjos Architects,

Chapter Secretary, SpecLink-E User Group, Publicity, Industry Forum

I have always said "It's the quiet ones you need to be listening to." Corey acts as Chapter Secretary, implemented our SpecLink-E user group, works on the Industry Forum Committee and is unfailingly patient with all of us while we ask him to do all kinds of crazy things to our website.

Alexander Lungerhausen, Hennebery Eddy Architects

Chapter Treasurer, Specifiers Share Group, Industry Forum

Alexander, another quiet force that makes up the backbone of this organization, recently took on the monumental task of re-organizing and transferring all of the Chapter's financial records to current and easily used software.  In addition, Alexander runs our Specifier Share Groups and contributes his talents to our Industry Forum.

Next time you see one of these individuals, take a moment to thank them for their hard work and dedication to Portland CSI.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
President's Message
Christine Irwin, CSI, President

2014 is the year that the last of the Baby Boomers turn 50, and in 2011, the first of the Baby Boomers turned 65. We are very different from our parents' generation. They were responsible for rebuilding the country after World War II and the Great Depression. The economy grew, suburbs emerged and their children became the generation of dreamers. We were formed by the Camelot years, the Vietnam War and the protests against it, the Civil Rights Movement, the first walk on the moon, the Kent State shootings and let's not forget, sex, drugs and rock and roll.

The Portland CSI Chapter has been very busy working on our lecture series and other events.  The Social Media for Dummies class in December was very well attended and enough people are interested that we may schedule another class soon.  Please let me know if you are interested in attending by emailing me here.

Registration is now open for our February "Bluebeam Software for Design and Construction" panel presentation at Ideate.  Full details are included in this newsletter.

If you are in the Tacoma neighborhood on February 6th, I will be presenting my CONSTRUCT 2013 presentation "Architect/Engineer Coordination, Closing the Gap" at their monthly chapter meeting.  This presentation will qualify for 1 AIA Learning Unit. Full details are included in the attached flier.  My presentation will be preceded by a Tech Talk by Anna Anderson from Forbo on "Full Transparency in Product Declarations."  I recently attended a similar presentation by our own Cherie McNabb and it was well worth the time.  I would love it if you would join us in Tacoma! LEARN MORE >

SpecLink-E User Group
Corey Morris, CSI, Board Secretary

The January meeting of the SpecLink Users Group included lively discussion about tracking changes between issues, best practices for file archiving (and saving copies of a project), managing user-added reference standards, when to start a specification for a project (at the beginning!), and SpecLink glitches.  If you use BSD's SpecLink software, you need to attend this group to get the most out of your software AND to save yourself time and effort.

Next Meeting:

Teamwork - Using SpecLink with Design Teams

Tuesday, March 18, 2014 12:00pm

Interface Engineering

708 SW Third Ave Suite 400

Portland, OR  97204

Spec writing can be a lonely, thankless job, but spec writers do get to work with others - their design team!  This will be our topic - working with our teams to verify scope, mark up drafts, identify new products and obtain feedback during construction.  Interface Engineering will give a short demonstration on the markup process used by their engineering teams - checklists, Bluebeam software, it's pretty sophisticated! Come prepared to learn and share.

Our CDT classes for spring of 2014 are underway!!  We are proud to announce the four recipients for our CDT Scholarship.  This means each of the following Emerging Professionals get CSI membership for a year, the Project Delivery & Practice Guide book, the CDT Study Workbook, classes with experienced instructors and the exam all for their cost of $100 (towards membership).

  • Jake LaManna, CSI, Architectural Intern, Oh Planning + Design
  • Lindsay Schmonsees, Project Team Coordinator, Interface Engineering
  • Noah Senitz, Electrical Designer, Interface Engineering
  • Zeitel Gray, Administrative Assistant, Interface Engineering

Wondering how YOU can get in on this?  Keep your eyes open for exam and resource scholarship opportunities for the fall exam and complete scholarship opportunities next spring.  There will be more information on our website coming soon.

Did you know that you don't have to be a member of CSI to take the CDT exam or classes?  You can earn AIA CES and CSI CEN learning units while furthering your knowledge on the construction process.

The CDT exam (Construction Documents Technologist) Educations Program teaches a thorough overview of the design and construction process.  It promotes an understanding of contractual agreements, roles, responsibilities, drawings and specifications, and construction delivery systems and how to consistently develop organized, effective construction documents.

Contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or even if you want more information on what your options are.

ADVERTISE / SPONSOR
Time to plan your CSI Sponsorship Opportunities for 2014

Happy New Year! With a new year comes new opportunities to support your favorite CSI Chapter (that would be us!) We know many of you have a need to plan your sponsorship opportunities early in the year, as your marketing budgets are established. So to help make that easy for you, we've compiled a list of sponsorship opportunities for the upcoming year. You can download the complete list for 2014.

DOWNLOAD 2014 LIST >

Just a few of the opportunities you'll find there:

  • Advertise in The Predicator, our monthly newsletter - Distributed to over 600 industry professionals in the region, your ad will be seen by a select market of contractors, designers, engineers and manufacturers. Rates start as low as $25 for per month.
  • Advertise on the Chapter website, portland.csinet.org. - Viewed by hundreds of CSI members every month, you can have a static ad with a link to your website for a little as $250 per year.
  • Sponsor a Chapter Meeting - Held the second Tuesday of the month, our meetings are publicized to over 500 industry professionals and on average attract 40 to 50 attendees. You can sponsor the meeting for $250, have your logo as part of the meeting promotion, and make a 5-minute pitch to the entire audience before the program presentation. What a value!
  • Annual Golf Tournament - This year, our infamous golf event will be August 21 at the Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland, Washington. Mark you calendars, and pick your sponsorship level (starting as little as $75). Don't miss out on this fantastic summer event.
  • NW Region Conference - Portland Chapter is hosting the NW Region Conference this year, May 8-10. This is your opportunity to be seen by CSI members on a regional level, with a variety of sponsorship levels available.
  • Industry Forum 2014 - Back at the Portland Art Museum for a sixth year, the Industry Forum will be better than ever with keynote speaker Snohetta Architecture, six more 6x10 presentations, and just about anyone who is anyone in the construction industry in attendance. It's all happening on May 8, in conjunction with the NW Region Conference (see above).

Don't let your competition beat you to the best sponsorship spots!
