Staff from Fredericksburg's Healing Arts Yoga will offer Saturday morning outdoor classes for all ages and skill levels in our garden. The first class of the spring series is Saturday, May 3, from 9 to 10 a.m. Get energized for your weekend, connect with nature, and support the museum at the same time! We recommend bringing a yoga mat. Classes are $8 and are drop-in - no reservation required!

This program qualifies the museum to participate in First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move! Museums & Gardens Initiative."

"What's in Store" at the James Monroe Museum
Beaded reticule

Come by the James Monroe Museum and enjoy the new items in our exhibits, such as the stunning Rembrandt Peale portrait of James Monroe and newly displayed items from our costume collection. One of the new items in the exhibit is a ca. 1804-7 French beadwork rticule, or purse, belonging to Elizabeth Monroe. The rticule was beautifully adapted as a cross stitch kit by the Posy Collection (see picture at right), which is now available in our Museum Store ($22.00). Get yours today and create your own Monroe inspired purse! Also new in the Store is a James Monroe Museum cross stitch bookmark kit, similarly inspired by the floral design on Elizabeth Monroe's rticule ($11.00). Either piece will serve as a unique reminder of your visit to the museum.

Have you ever wondered what games children played in the Colonial era? Come by the Store and check out a few! We have the traditional cup and ball toss (our Director, Scott Harris is a pro at this one!) and wooden tops. If your kids or grandkids are fans of games like Candyland and Chutes and Ladders, they will love Game of the Goose ($22.95)! The game is an early version of a Candyland-type board game and includes a canvas game board, dice and polished stones for game pieces. It is a fun and distinctive version of a game played as long ago as the late 16th century.

We look forward to seeing you at the James Monroe Museum Store!

The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, located in historic downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, is the largest repository in the country for artifacts and documents related to the fifth president of the United States. The museum was first opened in 1927 by Monroe descendants as a place to house their own personal collections, which had been handed down through generations of the family. Eventually, the museum and its extensive collections were turned over to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the museum is now administered by the University of Mary Washington.

The museum belongs to the American Association of Museums, the American Association for State and Local History, and the Virginia Association of Museums. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.
